As the US and its partners try to exploit the benefits of 5G networks for future national security uses, the focus has largely been on security terrestrial networks. But in this analysis, Melissa K. Griffith of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars argues that those worried about 5G security need to aim higher. What does the security, resilience, and defensibility of satellite systems have to do with the fifth generation of mobile (5G) networks? Far more than you may think. Much of our collective national security focus in the United States has been on the security concerns stemming from the terrestrial components of 5G networks (e.g. the radio access network, the Internet of Things, undersea cables, etc.). Comparatively little attention has been paid to national security concerns associated with the evolving role of satellite communication systems within this “network of networks.” The result is a potentially overlooked gap in our approach to 5G to date. Omnispace was selected by NSIN in 2020 to pilot its technology in connection with Verizon s new 5G Living Lab. This week, Omnispace successfully tested an initial 5G-via-satellite capability in a LinQuest lab demonstration for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. A number of commercial-off-the-shelf 5G devices successfully communicated voice and data services via an emulated 5G radio access network (RAN), to Omnispace s on-orbit satellite, leveraging LinQuest Corporation s lab facility in Northern Virginia. ....
