Coca-Cola's Debra Mallowah calls on SMEs to build lasting brands

Coca-Cola East and Central Africa Franchise Vice President, Debra Mallowah, has called upon MSMEs to focus on building a strong and consistent brand for their businesses amid the current tough economic times.
Mallowah was speaking during a mentorship session for MSME’s on COVID-19 recovery and resilience organized by the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) and Mastercard Foundation.
A survey conducted in April 2020 indicated that about 27% of MSMEs had already been forced to stop their operations, while another 44% required working capital financing to survive.
“The past one year has been tough for most MSMEs and a significant number have even gone out of business due to cash flow challenges and poor sales. My message to you is not to let failure define who you are but to let failure teach you. Position yourself as a powerful brand, be consistent and treat every day as a beginning of new possibilities,” added Mallowah. ....

Covid-19 has brought more than its fair share of woes. Not least has been its deleterious effect on the environment. How? Well, it’s sent consumption of fizzy drinks from single-use cans and plastic bottles through the roof. And it’s derailed plans for the UK’s biggest-ever initiative to ensure drinks packaging is recycled, the deposit return scheme.
In short, it’s been a disaster for the Earth’s oceans – where the amount of plastic waste is expected to triple in the next 20 years, according to a paper published last July in the journal Science.
In 2020, shoppers took home 561.7 million more single-use cans of cola, lemonade, fruit carbonates and mixers than they did in 2019, bringing total sales to 2.9 billion cans. More than 710.4 million plastic pop bottles were taken home, a rise of 102.6 million [Kantar 52 w/e 27 December 2020]. ....

The Open to Better campaign sees Coke’s cans redesigned with its usual logo replaced by text where customers can make personal pledges to do things differently in 2021

In an attempt to spread some happiness and hope following an appalling year, this new campaign by 72andSunny Amsterdam sees the creation of a set of limited edition packs of Coca-Cola Original Taste, Zero Sugar and Diet Coke/Coca-Cola Light where customers can write their positive messages for what will hopefully be a better year ahead.
The campaign is a follow on from Coke’s ad from last summer starring George the Poet, Open Like Never Before, which envisioned new ways of living and thinking post-pandemic. As well as the cans, for this campaign, 72andSunny Amsterdam has created a series of short, light-hearted ads featuring ideas of the kind of resolutions people could make (a long version comb ....
