Birmingham: The mayors of at least three Alabama cities, including heavily populated Birmingham, have been diagnosed with COVID-19 as the illness spreads rapidly across the state following the holidays. The city of Birmingham said Mayor Randall Woodfin was admitted to a hospital with COVID-19 pneumonia Monday, five days after announcing he tested positive for the new coronavirus. Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling said he was quarantining at home after testing positive for the virus, and the city of Auburn said Mayor Ron Anders was in quarantine after testing positive. Governor Larry Hogan today announced that the Maryland Department of Labor has begun accepting claims and issuing payments for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), Pandemic Unemployment Emergency Compensation (PEUC), and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) unemployment insurance programs extended by the Continued Assistance for Unemployed Workers Act.
“Just one week after the federal COVID-19 relief package was signed into law, Maryland is one of the first states in the nation to have already programmed and implemented all three of the extended unemployment insurance programs,” said Governor Hogan. “Our team has been working around the clock to bring this much-needed financial relief to unemployed Marylanders as we continue to navigate this public health and economic crisis.” ....

Unemployment benefits for hundreds of thousands of Americans could extend into next year if President Trump signs the COVID relief package and spending bill.

WASHINGTON Unemployment benefits for hundreds of thousands of Americans are slated to cease Saturday if President Donald Trump does not sign lawmakers’ coronavirus relief package and spending bill.
The U.S. Department of Labor says both the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program and Pandemic Unemployment Emergency Compensation program will end Dec. 31. However, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia labor and unemployment officials say none of the benefits associated with those programs can be paid out later than Dec. 26. ....

New Stimulus Bill Provides $300 Per Week of Enhanced Unemployment for 11 Weeks


Who qualifies
Under the CARES Act, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance provides aid to workers who don t traditionally qualify, including the self-employed, freelancers, gig workers, and parents who were forced out of work due to child-care needs, for up to 39 weeks. With the latest stimulus package, these workers, whose benefits were scheduled to end Dec. 26, will continue to be eligible for another 11 weeks, until March 14, 2021.
The bill also adds another 11 weeks of benefits for those receiving Pandemic Unemployment Emergency Compensation, for a total of 24 extra weeks of coverage, on top of what each state provides, to people experiencing long-term joblessness.
Together, more than 14 million workers are drawing from one of the two CARES unemployment programs, out of the 20.6 million Americans receiving jobless aid as of the end of November. ....
