A Sydney Model Slammed A Fashion Week Show For Being 'Tokenistic'

Published June 7, 2021
A model who walked in the final runway at Australian Fashion Week has also called out that particular show for being “tokenistic” and “palatable”, and having “simply no range, and no flavour” in the diversity within the ‘Future Of Fashion’ show.
Basjia Almaan took to her Instagram on Sunday with an image of herself on the last runway show at Fashion Week, calling out the show in particular for being “tokenistic” in its aim for diversity. In the post, Basjia noted that she’s considered a ‘curve model’ as a size 12-14 but is still considered “palatable” to the wider fashion industry.

Australian Fashion Week slammed as wheelchair users struggle on the runway

Australian Fashion Week organisers have been criticised for promoting 'inclusivity' yet making their final catwalk barely accessible for wheelchair users.
After the Future of Fashion event on Friday, during which multiple designers showcased their collections, model and Paralympian Rheed McCracken struggled to move his wheelchair on the runway, which was covered in shredded paper.
Confronting footage showed the decorative shreds becoming entangled in the athlete's wheels, while other models continued their walk ahead of him.
