With the conclusion of the 2020/21 FIS Snowboard World Cup seasons at the end of Sunday’s slopestyle competitions in Silvaplana (SUI), the last of this season’s major trophies were distributed to the top athletes and nations. Today we’re taking a look back at the big winners of a season unlike any other…
FIS Snowboard Nations Cup overall
Austria - 2882 points
Powered on by their alpine and snowboard cross racing squads and crystal globe-winning seasons for Alessandro Haemmerle (in men’s SBX) and Anna Gasser (in slopestyle and Park & Pipe overall), the Austrian Snowboard Team was able to earn the FIS Snowboard Nations Cup overall honours for the 2020/21 season. Claiming 15 World Cup podiums on the season and 52 top-10s, Austria finished with 2882 points - just over 400 points clear of second place Italy.

After the freeskiers opened things up on Tuesday at the final day of competition for the Aspen 2021 FIS Snowboard & Freeski World Championships, the snowboarders shut it down, with an incredible big air competition that saw Canada sweep the top of the podium on the strength of standout, gold-medal performances from Laurie Blouin and Mark McMorris.
Blouin edges Sadowski-Synnott with final run magic
No stranger to make-or-break situations, Blouin came into Aspen 2021 already owning slopestyle gold from the Sierra Nevada 2017 World Championships, slopestyle silver from the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, as well as 2019 X Games big air gold. On Tuesday in Aspen her imperviousness to pressure was once again on display as she used her final hit of the afternoon to squeak her way into top spot.

The first day of medal competition at the Aspen 2021 FIS Snowboard and Freeski World Championships took place under near-perfect spring conditions on Friday at Aspen’s Buttermilk Mountain, where we witnessed Zoi Sadowski-Synnott of New Zealand and Marcus Kleveland of Norway earn slopestyle World Championships gold medals in a dramatic day of action.
Sadowski-Synnott first rider ever to win back-to-back World Championship slopestyle golds
Due to challenging weather during qualifications and a double-up judging format for the men there, the jury in Aspen elected to send 16 men through to a two-run finals to give more riders the opportunity for a more intensive section-by-section judging format. The women, however, qualified with the scheduled program and judging format, meaning that the top eight women would drop in on a three-run finals and that, for a change, their third run would be the final one of the competition.

Aspen 2021: Slopestyle and Big Air Preview

Utah 2019 big air World Champion: N/A (cancelled)
Sierra Nevada 2017 big air World Champion: Anna Gasser (AUT)
17 years into her international career still at the absolute pinnacle of the sport, Jamie Anderson of the host U.S. squad comes into Aspen 2021 looking for one of the only titles she doesn’t yet own, as she seeks to add world champs gold to her extensive trophy case. With back-to-back Olympic slopestyle gold medals and the PyeongChang 2018 big air silver, two crystal globes, eight X Games golds, ten World Cup wins, eight US Open victories, and innumerable other accolades, Anderson’s CV is the heaviest in all of snowboarding. The 30 year-old has shown nothing but excellence once again this winter, and we expect nothing less than that from her this week in Aspen.

Slopestyle action in Crans Montana (SUI)
After an extremely turbulent week of extreme winter weather and delays, and as a result of the tireless effort put in by the local organisers and the park and shaping crews on site, the Crans Montana (SUI) European Cup snowboard halfpipe and slopestyle competitions originally slated to take place last week were finally able to go down under blue skies on Sunday in a huge day of action that also saw freeski halfpipe competition taking place.

The Crans Montana events were part of the Audi Snowboard Series, and both the halfpipe and slopestyle competitions saw a solid mix of World Cup regulars riding alongside up-and-comers from around the world, with some standout riding going down throughout the day in Switzerland.
