day. if you have out door plans go for it because highs only reach the upper 80s and low 90s. to get outdoors, today is the day to do it because we ll have heat this weekend. not quite as humid and high temperatures still close to 90 degrees. i ll have more on the weekend forecast in a couple of minutes. allison and tony back to you. tucker, thank you. to our top stories now, president barack obama heading to the economic summit in toronto. he and other world leaders aarriving for the g-20 and g-8 summits. there are questions about how to prevent another global recession. the president has being asking other countries not to reduce stimulus spending but there is a worry about another default like the one seen in greece. financial reform in the united states. one of the topics that will be discuss add mong the world leaders. early this morning in washington lawmakers cleared the way for a sweeping overhaul of wall street. they plan to have a bill on the president s desk by july 4th. it creates a consumer financial protection bureau to police lending and sets rules of instruments by large firms that have been unregulated. and a push for derivatives was the last sticking point. the rules are less strict than investors had feared. now under the new bill, banks would only have to do away with the riskiest trades and would be able to arrange credit default swaps, the trades leading to the meltdown. those trades have to go through clearing houses. and there was a bill to extend jobless benefits for unemployed workers that failed to pass. that means 200,000 people a week will start losing their check. doug luzader is on capitol hill with more on this story. reporter: unemployment lines are still long. but for many unemployment benefits are about to hit a wall. workers who are approaching the six-month point may face a cutoff. the motion is not agreed to. reporter: a vote in the senate to extend the benefits went down in flames last night with democrats howling. the filibuster that s been waged by the republicans in the senate has gone on now for two months to stop unemployment benefits. reporter: republicans though, who stood unanimously against the extension, said congress needs to find a way to cover the tab. and simply tacking it on to the debt isn t good enough. what we re not willing to do is use worthwhile programs as an excuse to burden our children or grandchildren with a bigger national debt than we have. reporter: and along with more money to the states to avoid laughs, all of which was from the white house who supported the spending. but the president heads to canada today for an economic summit. he s expected to tell other countries to get their financial houses in order and reduce their deficits. it means that deficit countries have to start getting serious about their mid term and long-term debt and deficits. and that includes the united states of america. and that was fox s doug luzader reporting. the president will press congress to extend the benefits but at the morning the deficit is trumping everything else. allison. right now fans here in the u.s. and around the world are gathering to mark the one-year anniversary of michael jackson s death. they are gathering at forest lawn cemetery in hollywood where jackson is interred. the cemetery will open its gates to fans but they won t be allowed to visit the mausoleum holding his body. fans will gather at neverrerland range and his home town of gary, indiana. it s been an entire year. but for some the shock and sadness over his death is still fresh. i can t put it in words. he was everything to me. i can t believe it s already been a year. i was in dallas at the time when it happened working and i heard michael jackson died and i said how is that possible. he s one of the people you think is immortal but everyone has to go every once in a while. jackson s personal doctor, conrad murray, is accused of giving him a powerful anesthetic to help him sleep. the washington wizards select john wall from the university of kentucky. our other big story this morning, as local sports fans rejoice, the wizards number one nba draft pick is john wall. but will this be the turn around the team needs? stacy cohan joins us outside of the verizon center where wizards fans are getting ready to greet their new point guard. reporter: good morning. it is wall to wall wall. there were banners welcoming wall. take a look over my shoulder. this just appeared in the last few minutes. pat kern happened to notice, game changer wall. everybody is getting off the metro here at gallery place in china town, they can see what this town is so excited about. if you want to take another look at the man, go ahead. we have him with his wizards ball cap as he was announced as our number one pick in the nba draft. the wizards was no it was no surprise but nonetheless exciting to see. this is a 19-year-old kentucky point guard, 6 4 . now i ve been talking to the fans. and we have some big name players in this town before and we had michael jordan. it was the end evident of the end of his career and he was on our court. and is it difference this time? and they have to answer the question, is wall really the answer for washington? i think he s going to be great. i just hope he continues his education while he improves the wizards and works with arenas and everybody else. i think it will be a good year. why does this feel different? maybe it s because what the team went through this last year with the controversy and you have a guy coming in who is a stand-up and very good guy and it couldn t have come at a better time. that s probably the best thing. reporter: now we have another new player, not as much hype but supposed to be a really good thing, a potential mentor for the young john wall. this is kirk hind rick. and we made a trade but it s not done for a couple of weeks. some salary changes will come into effect. and if you want to see wall, come on down to the verizon center at the f. street entrance at 11:30. the washington wizards said they will have an informal greeting to welcome wall and the public can cheer him on and give him the support and show him how much he means to the community. and i know you said it earlier, it feels different to me. i m an optimist, i m excited about donovan mcnabb and strasburg. this is going to be a good sports year. i feel it with you. thank you so much, stacy. the fate of three men on trial in the death of a d.c. lawyer, robert wone, now rests solely in the hands of a judge. house mates price, zaborsky and ward have been charged with obstruction of justice. closing arguments were heard yesterday as the prosecutor made one last attempt to persuade the judge that the house mates were involved in a cover-up. there is no jury in this case. the judge is expected to issue her ruling on tuesday morning. well metro s biggest ever fare hike goes into effect on sunday. the board took it s final vote on thursday to increase bus fares from $1.25 to $1.50 if you use a smart trip card. $1.70 if you pay cash. on the rails, the minimum fare is $1.95 and rail fares will top out at $5. an extra rush hour fee won t go in effect until august 1st. and if you use a pay per fare card that will cost you an extra 25 cents a trip. your best advice is a smart trip card will get you the best fare on buses and rails. bp is getting help from a former clinton disaster expert. oil giant hired james lee whit. and he is an expert on responding to disasters. meanwhile the judge in new orleans who struck down president obama s drilling moratorium is refusing to put the issue on hold until an appeal is filed. and ken salazar is being asked to reinstate the six month ban on deepwater drilling. she has traveled all around the world with united states presidents making sure that their medical needs are met. the president s personal physician will tell us tales from her time in the white house up next on fox 5 morning news and her book is out. and we have a live look out there. we know it s been scorching out there. is that a word? it sounds like a word. it s a word, but does it make sense? you can imagine living with hotter conditions inside? what some neighbors in the d.c. region are pleading for relief from. fox 5 morning news will be right back. we re going to rewrite that and reread it coming up. and if you had to paint the broad headlines in the white house? very much like a pressure cooker. whatever happens stress wise in the press and the news, it s magnified definitely in the white house. and whenever there are issues in the life of the president, the white house doctor always consents because you re following him 24 hours a day. and you did get snarled in the most scandalous episodes. how do you deal with that taking it personal as far as what you do for a living? one of the advantages of being a military officer at the time, because you are assigned as a military officer, is you do injure job and you do the mission. i did get ensnarled in the monica lewin ski case because he was required to draw bill clinton s blood for the dna check. and let s talk about the overall pressure. you said you had to work closely with the secret service because if happens you have to move along with everybody to. tell us about that. you are velcrod to the president and they protect him but the doctor is there in case there is any type of medical emergency on the scene. and you talk about specifics too. you talk about hillary clinton s blood clot and how far in detail do you go into the book? i cover enough to be respectful of her. she did mention it in her memoir. i talked about when she called me on a saturday explaining she had pain in her calf. and i went in to see her and she didn t even want to come in and see me and she didn t want to be hospitalized because she had to carry out her mission to get elected as senator and we used a subcutaneous injectable medication that was on the market and she continued doing what she wants to do. and also talked about the president s mother during her cancel batter. and that s a fine line. and we come in and expect that it won t be talked about but this is such a compelling look as to what goes on behind the gates. a lot of people don t realize, these are hume ab beings and they human beings and they get sick and thicks happen in their life that affect their ability and we re there to witness that. and in terms of the book, it did receive the blessing of president clinton. he was kind enough to write the forward for the book as well. now, please, there are a lot of people who don t make good patients. do you dish on who was the worst patient to cover who wanted to keep on going when you needed to, you can talk about that? i do. it s a challenge to get them to watch their diet and get plenty of rest when they are nonstop. so it is a challenge to make them be complaint. because when everybody else is the bus stops with the president and then you get to say, no, mr. president, or in the future, perhaps, mr. president you have to stop and do this, take your medication or watch out for your health. someone said the white house doctor is the only doctor in america who can tell the president to shut up and in bill clinton s case every christmas time he would get laryngitis. so we tell everybody at the holiday parties, my doctor told me to stop talking and tell them about that over and over again. and i bet it serves also as a history lesson because when you said that, i thought often he would be horse and then we saw him get off the big macs. and when i got to introduce with you, one gets sense of calmness. and emotional for you to talk? it s a story i think that helps other women and other minorities because you are constantly never sitting in, you are standing out because you don t fit the mold. in a lot of ways you define the next mold and define how you will make yourself be known in your job and in your opportunities. so in a lot of ways the advantage was i didn t look like the typical white house doctor so you got their attention. and now you have a chance to speak up and do something good for the organization. you have a change to a chance to break the mold. exactly. and this is dr. connie mariano and the book is called the white house doctor into and plenty still ahead. america s favorite coffee chains could be make something changes. coming up on fox 5 morning news, what could soon be coming to a starbucks near you. holly, don t panic. holly likes herup of jo. holly is in studio to help us with a story. i am in studio today because today marks the 20th anniversary of fox 5 morning news. and coming up we ll find out what we were all doing 20 years ago. we ll talk live with the grand dam of fox 5 morning news and plus we have something special for those who have been here for all 20 years. it s all live later right here on fox 5 morning news. stay with us. here is today s trivia question. who was our very first sky fox traffic reporter? talking about. it is time to answer our ask allison question this week. this one is really different. fascinating stuff and it comes from a viewer named lori. here is what she said. this is shorter but i m going to read you what i need to tell you about this so you understand the depths of this request. she writes, i recently purchased a world war ii japanese war flag thinking she would sell it on e-bay as i m saving for a vacationch i found these flags were takep from japanese soldiers as a souvenir or after they were killed. they were given to the soldiers before they went to war and were signed by family members and friends wishing them a safe return home. when i learned this, i felt that selling the flag would be wrong. i want to return it to the soldier or his family. this flag came with translations. she knows the owner s name and believes he could still be alive as well as others who have signed the flag. she writes, please help me, i don t know where to start. but interestingly enough, there was an article in time magazine back in 1996 about this gentleman. however it didn t give lori much to go on. she knows his name know. it s ichiro otaki. he would be about 90 right now. she writes anything you can do to help would be appreciated. and we have a picture of the flag. she sent that in. and you see the writings that she spoke of and it came with a document that talked about the flag s owner. that s how she knew the owner s name. and here is what i found out and i have been e-mailing her because this is very personal to her as you can imagine. i had no idea where to start on this. but my first idea was the japanese embassy. we re right here in washington, so i gave a call to now i consider a friend tyler campbell at the embassy. he s taking this over for you, lori. and in the hopes of guesting this flag back to the man. he let me in on how this will happen. the picture of the flag will be sent to the war victims relief bureau and they will do research to actually make sure that this person did own the flag. they will try to find out who the owner is. in fact, and any relatives if the owner is not living so she can send the flag overseas. they warned this could take months or years and we know the man lived in a small fishing town and they are working on this and i think it s wonderful you are trying to do this and we wish you the best of luck in this endeavor and thank you for making us a part of it. wonderful. when it came in i was struck by it. it was like putting the history pieces together on it. and i didn t know that about those flags. i didn t either. that s very interesting. i would only ask that lori, if it works out and she s able to get it back to that japanese soldier s family, that she let us know. let us know. it s a great story. and if you have a question you want me to work on or help answer for you, head to our website at myfoxdc.com and click on the morning tab for a link. and you can up load yourself asking the question. let us know, like tony said. now one school system is now making condoms available to 6-year-olds. we ll take a look at this controversy coming up next on fox 5. and then an apology from a hollywood a-lister. what val kilmer said to rolling stone magazine that he said he s sorry. do you notice a trend this week? ok, so jen, you go deep. hey, here s a good call: new whole grain helper. try some! mmmm. honey mustard chicken. with 100% whole grain rice. hey, can you catch? no, sir, i cannot. new whole grain helper. one pound. one pan. one whole grain meal. hey, little dude. dinner s my middle name. how bout some hamburger helper? oh, my, but your mouth is gonna love it. and your wallet s gonna be pretty happy, too. now this is the deal of the day. hamburger helper.one pound, one pan, one tasty meal. 9:39 now. parents are outraged over a new policy at a school district in massachusetts that will allow schools to hand out condoms to elementary school children. a committee in provincetown adopted the policy this week. starting next school year the condoms will be readily available to kids from prekindergarten through 6th grade and all they have to do is ask. they will be required to talk to a counselor or nurse. parents say the children are too young to be exposed to sex education. i think it s a little too young. my kids even going into 7th and that s too young for him but kindergarten is way, way too little. the school system said that first and foremost they do emphasize abstinence. actor val kilmer is saying sorry to his neighbors to a comment he made 7 years ago. he bashed his home town of san miguel, new mexico, in a interview with rolling stone magazine. he said he wants to change his ranch in the town to a bed and breakfast and this week he showed up at a county commission meeting to apologize. i sincerely apologize for comments that i made that have been seen as a negative about our community, about myself, about my neighbors. because it s just not who i am. the commission decided to grant kilmer the permit to required for him to open his ranch as a bed and break fast. all morning we ve been sharing with you a [ laughter ] i remember when jean elliott had her baby. it was with john bush? no. and holly has been here all morning helping us celebrate our two decades on the air. but what exactly was holing doing 20 years ago? spotlight on me. let s take a look. i was a sophomore engineering student at duke. that s me, the girl in the picture. you have not changed. i was also an orientation leader. so the fun thing about this picture is actually that my little freshman boys that i had there, i was showing them the ropes yeah. and i don t know why they re showing my legs now, but they really like the high wasted shorts maybe. but the guy on the far right is now any husband. oh, wow. i love it. that is great. who knew? the journey it was. i think it s my turn. holly was an undergraduate and i was a graduate at columbia at the university of south carolina. and i was rocking the you can t really see it. can you see it? i can see it. i kind of look to the side. are you pointing at something? i think i m doing a little artistic thing. i was 24. the jury is out whether it s salt and pepper or debarge. i would be bunny debarge. so that was me in columbia. and this is me 20 years ago. unlike you young people who were still in college, i was working. i d been out of college for a couple of years. [ laughter ] and i was working at still working at wkys. and this is during the peek time with johnny simpson and don irving. i ve lost the beard, because it was getting gray and i don t like the way it looks now. but thank you very much. now perhaps the most striking creature. this is what we ve been talking about. clearly an identity crisis was here. i was a senior in college. i lived in california. unbelievable. i was enjoying my youth. and that was the look that was very popular back in the day. and so as i said earlier, i was popular with the ladies. you have a beautiful head of hair. how many times were you arrested. you do garner attention when your hair is that long. and you kept the country club look. that is my hair. people think that is a wig. that is actually my hair. and it was tough would you pull it back, tuck? i need to know what you would do on a regular basis? would you braid it. no. but i did wear it back. and my grand parents or parents didn t love it but it was kind of like a tattoo today, but i could cut it. and it explains why you have a good hair of head today. i don t suggest that. that is very hard to maintain. you look like trouble to me in that picture. i love it though. it would have been great fun for us. we cannot talk about our 20 year anniversary without mentioning former anchor lark mccarthy. absolutely right. she helped lead fox 5 morning news for 17 years. let s take a look at some of the clips we showed when she signed off in 2007. and the chair has now ruled that it is not ger main, not relevant to the impeachment revolution. this is a disaster of major proportions. we don t have any word yesterday about casualties. they are now saying that a plane incredibly has crashed into the pentagon. folks, you are not going to see another day like this. about an hour into the tape, barry picks up a pipe and smokes what prosecutors say is a pipe. the residents of adams morgan appear quiet this morning. and have you seen those printed schedules and you have them for the students. i know it s right. she may seem dickory but her philosophy is serious. you do your job and i do my job. and she has a good sense of right and wrong and when she gets sense in her ways, nobody is moving her. wow. joining us now on the phone live from las vegas, lark mccarthy. good morning, lark. good morning. and happy anniversary. you started this thing. happy anniversary to you. you can believe it was 20 years ago? no. it s gone so fast. and i just want to remind people that the broadcast is in very good hands. and also people forget, it s such a fixture now that at the time, 1990, it was seen as a gamble. could a local broadcast compete against the networks and the answer is we ve always been the little engine that could. now we re the 5 and a half hour engine. [ laughter ] now i also want to say in terms of hair, i think tucker had the eddie van halen look going on but i wouldn t take my height against your debarge look, allison. i think you might have me. that s one of the fun things when you look back at all of the video, we re showing it right now, just looking at the hair styles and changing fashion. now we re seeing you with f. lee barry. what are you remembering most. i m still struck about something by saying, oh, i talked to that person, i covered that issue. and 9/11 stands out above all else. and i ve been noticed by the harry reid story. marion barry, and i remember those many interviews with him overall of the years. his ups and downs, the comebacks, the clintons, covering that impeachment, the first ladies. the discussions at the old green marble table. there is nothing like a good story well told about things that impact people s lives. i love those things. still love those things. as we move forward now, to hopefully another 20 years. we know the industry has change much. but we re still here and trying to put on the good product and we often think of you, like what would lark do? and your vision, because you re very much a part of it, where do you hope to see the show go and what would make you proud? we want to know? it would make me proud with good stories well told to always keep in mind your audience and respect for the audience. even though we do this every day and now you do it every day, for many people every day it s their first encounter with the media and be fair. and people say how did you come up with that tough question. i think of the logical questions. so to be respectful of your guests and few and viewers and to look for the stories that have impact, import and not to lose sight of that. and to have fun. i m going to work on my john wall dance later today. lark. wanted to ask you, because you went through several coanchors, how long on average did you it take you to train the coanchors? [ laughter ] well, holly, i ve had such a wonderful time with so many different people, different styles, different personalities. in fact i talked to michael gago yesterday, still in touch with a number of them and each of them brought something to the broadcast and i learned something about news, journalism and about working with people. and you gaut grace and elegance and we look you always brought grace and elegance. can you come back, we need some people that need help. and it is about discipline. you ve been doing it for 17 years and it was a privilege. i have so many great memories on and off the air with you guys. and i thank you for that. well, lark, you ve been so important to all of us and to the viewers here in the washington area, all of us when we are out still ask about you and how you are doing. we let them know you are doing fine in las vegas and very busy out there. and your show out there is one of the most popular. [ laughter ] thanks. that will have a half life. it will be on the web somewhere now. that s so funny. and holly, i m waiting for my china cup. well, you know how things are going right now here. and lark, happy anniversary to you. happy anniversary. and don t forget the politics. cover the reed angle race. we re doing much more of that. so that s good. thank you. thanks for calling me. a i appreciate it. been enjoying the broadcast this morning. stay with us. we have a final check on weather next. and plus the answer to the trivia question. and you see the first sky fox 5 traffic reporter. and we ll have the answer to that. w some of our favorite things? we love summertime fun! .wearing our favorite colors. .and jamming to our favorite bands! but we love eating totino s the most. we live for fun. .friends. [ both ] .and best of all. [ all ] .our favorite. .eating totino s! we re the kids in america oh, oh, oh we re the kids in. a look at the forecast. 90 this afternoon and we ll heat up this weekend and hazy, hot and humid by sunday. could be an isolated thunderstorm on sunday. better chance on monday with strong storms and then cooling down into the 80s next week and today should be nice with lower humidity. and time for the answer of the trivia question. who was our very first sky fox traffic reporter. the answer is carrie lee hallcot and she moved on to boston is anchor with fox 29 in philadelphia. and there she is. what a transformation. how beautiful. that s great. good for her. enough about her, more about us. [ laughter ] because we have some very special people to recognize. these are people who have been here from day one, all 20 years, some of them are up here in the studio. some are still working in the broadcast and control room. max geo meta, dave risak, steve renner, connie murray, renee moore, jim matthews, tony spencer, ozzie core son, doug wilkes, mark sergeant and michelleine bowman. they have endured. some of them in the control room and some of them are off and here. and these are the folks behind the scenes. these folks you don t normally see on tv and now that you see them, you know why. [ laughter ] just kidding. i m kidding, i m kidding. we want to thank the folks at rsvp catering and they have supplied us with a cake. it is a vanilla cake with white chocolate mouse. thank you so much. take a look at that. absolutely beautiful. and we have an array of mugs so this coffee will go great with the cake that has been here. there is the first one. we put coffee on there. there is a tv that lights up. and then we progress to cappa chino. and because i would like to be here a 13th year we should
