Chandler selects city manager after national search

View Comments
Chandler announced it would promote an internal candidate, Joshua Wright, to lead the city after conducting a national search to replace City Manager Marsha Reed, who retired in March.
The City Council is expected to approve Wright's contract at an Aug. 12 meeting.
Since March, Wright has served as interim city manager in the suburb of some 260,000 residents southeast of Phoenix. He joined the city as an assistant city manager in 2017.
"I am honored by the Mayor and council's confidence in me to serve as Chandler’s city manager and am excited about our community’s bright future," Wright said in a statement. "As an East Valley native, I have always admired Chandler’s visionary leadership and couldn’t be more excited to serve the city my family and I call home."

Glendale adds LGBTQ protections. Chandler may soon follow

View Comments
Glendale on Tuesday became the third metro Phoenix city to add protections for LGBTQ people in the past two months.
The Glendale City Council unanimously approved an ordinance that prohibits discrimination in public places, housing and many workplaces, and extends the protections to the LGBTQ community.
Mesa and Scottsdale passed ordinances in March and April, respectively.
A fourth Valley city, Chandler, is discussing a similar move.
This tide of municipal action comes nearly seven years after Arizona legalized same-sex marriages and more than 20 years after the first Arizona city, Tucson, passed a nondiscrimination ordinance in 1999. Phoenix added protections for gay and lesbian people in 2012 and Tempe followed suit in 2014.

Arizona education: Bill would fine teachers for 'controversial' issues

View Comments
Arizona teachers could face a $5,000 penalty if they allow classroom discussions on controversial topics such as racism or fail to give equal weight to divisive topics, under provisions of a last-minute amendment that flew through the Arizona House of Representatives on Wednesday.
The changes to Senate Bill 1532 are intended to ensure students aren't taught that their race, ethnicity or sex determines their character, Rep. Michelle Udall R-Mesa, said of the amendment she introduced.
But Democrats denounced it as an overreach into the classroom and said it was a thinly veiled attempt to stir up public discord about critical race theory and further deepen partisan divides in Arizona.

Arizona's number of identified COVID-19 cases has reached 845,480 (up 570 from the day before), and the number of deaths increased by six to 16,996.
It's Tuesday afternoon, and this is Coronavirus Watch from The Arizona Republic, where we update you about the latest on how COVID-19 is affecting you and our community.
Arizona will receive $65.8 million from the feds to help communities continue to deliver COVID-19 vaccines. About 20% of Arizonans are fully vaccinated against the virus, but experts say the state needs to move closer to 70% to reach herd immunity.

In Arizona, Joseph Chaplik, a Scottsdale Republican, has introduced House Bill 2770 that would give businesses the option of ignoring mask mandates.
He calls it a matter of “freedom and liberties.”
Chaplik’s bill passed the House on a 31-28 party-line vote, with Democrats opposing.
