gripping a huge part of the country right now. hot and hotter. that s what the national weather service says that we can expect for the next several days, and you need it know this. at least 16 states under heat advisories or warnings today. adding to the misery, nearly 2 million people without electricity in the d.c. area and surrounding states. deadly storms battered that area over the weekend killing at least 16 people. our brian todd is outside in that heat in the d.c. suburb of wheaton, maryland. brian, what s the biggest problems you re seeing right now? reporter: right now the rush hour is officially over, but really it s not over. one of the biggest problems in this area is traffic snarl. hundreds of traffic lights are out. there s one over here on randolph road just a couple hundred yards up from us now where they are trying to get people through that light. people say treat this like a four-way stop. every stop around here treat it like a four-way stop. this ....

ferocious flame, firefighters are starting to get an upper hand. that s the good news. we have reporters, as always, all over the country covering these major stories for you. i want to start out with sandrasandra endo and let s begin with athena. athena, nearly 4 million homes are without power from indiana to player land from the brutal storms, the death toll is climbing. what can you tell us? what are you seeing? reporter: well, we know that there are six confirmed deaths in virginia, poppy. that s coming from the governor s office, governor rob mcdonald. at least 1 million customers are without power in west virginia and that s a large chunk of the nearly 4 million. the governor has declared a state of emergency due to the severe storms and we note two other deaths and an official said a man was electrocuted after he left his house and a woman in maryland, a 71-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on her home. this is proof of how dangerous the storms can be ....
