good afternoon, everyone. And I welcome back to high school of tea. I'm Zach Adams that I'm joined this afternoon by a Mount Airy Head Boys basketball coach Brian Hayes, as well as I senior power forward. I Grant Ruth. I thank you all for joining me this afternoon, guys. Thank you. Appreciate it. No problem. First question here is for you. Coach at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association is letting a member schools play 14 regular season basketball games beginning on January 4th with the ongoing pandemic and the variables that come with that just how exciting or relieving was it for the grand affairs to actually have something to work toward? You know, whenever that news came out about the January 4 start date there in August? Yeah, you know, we were We were I think we were all sitting on the edge of our seats, uh, this summer and then this fall, hoping and praying that we were gonna get the opportunity to showcase our kids and give them an opportunity to play eso when you know, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association finally came through and said, We're going with this season. I think that we were all tickled? Um, you know, it is a little bit of, uh, downfall that we did have to shorten this season, but it is what it is. A Zilong as we could get out there and play and compete, that's what matters. We just wanted the opportunity to play, and we're thankful that we're getting that opportunity. That's a grant with covert and everything else going on. Uh, did you get the chance Thio play any travel ball or you throughout the summer and early fall? Um, in the beginning of it was hard, you know, there would be some of us going out. You know, outside courts get together every other day and playing because it was hard not being able to be in a gym. But as Kobe kind of progressed, and we all just kind of got through it so gruesome workouts that coaches have put on. But honestly, we be texting each other all the time after school and out of school, like saying, Let's go meet up here and shoot some ball replacing ball. So when we finally got opened up to G o, the blue chip Fall League put on by Keyshawn. Um, it was a breath of fresh air, Honestly, because we that was our first organized playing, Uh, we've done in months. So we knocked some rest off, and it was just It's when they get back out there after a long, long summer. So, uh, to grant the NCHS A also has a mass mandate in effect for its basketball players as well as the shortening season. Obviously, just for some of the initial reactions for you and some of your teammates as well as just how have the practice is gone, support having to keep those Maskell? Um, when we first heard about it, we were honestly upset, you know, because, um, it's it's hard to play basketball with the mask on, but we've honestly, we've had to fight through it because we all want to play. And so if we had to wear a mask or four mask over her face and then where gloves always play, we're gonna do everything that we can so that we get the 14 games and have a chance to go far into the state playoffs because we just wanna play ball. It's a coach. We're talking a little bit before the interview started about just how your team has handled Cove in 19 and the protocols that are in place with that. Just talk. Now, just about what you've seen from your players, those practices or workouts throughout the summer and fall as well as just what are some of your expectations with those, our restrictions in a way, on the kids, you know, with the face coverings and otherwise, yes, sir s. So I'll start with this summer. You know, this summer was a lot more strict with the amount of numbers that we could have in the gym. Uh, we couldn't share basketball. So I think all the coaches across the state were challenged with, you know, coming up with drills and ways to, you know, to develop their players without being able to share basketball's, you know? So that was tough this summer. We were fortunate that the kids were not having to wear mask yet, but, you know, as we progressed into the fall and the mask mandate came out, um, you know, we really had thio kind of revamp our practice schedules. We added more water breaks in, um, trying to give guys opportunities Thio catch their breath because I think basketball is one of the most, you know, aerobic exercises that, you know, Ah, high school athlete can perform And, uh, you know, a lot of hard breathing and the mask is restrictive. Um, but like Grant said, I'll echo that. Our guys are have been very, very flexible. They've they've bought into every rule or guideline that's been established and they're getting better, you know? And I've told the guys that everybody's gonna be wearing the mask, so we need to move on and get over it, because if we can adapt to it and and still keep our tempo high and, you know, keep our conditioning strong, that's gonna be a difference maker in ballgames. Um, so the guys have been very positive. I think that's been something that we've tried Thio to them. This entire process was, you know, just stay positive, stay positive because you know it. It is what it is, and and we've got to adjust. And we've got to adapt, and whatever it takes to play, we're gonna do it because we want to play. So I'm proud of the guys because they haven't been complaining. I mean, I know it's tough on them, and I hear some little things here and there. But, you know, they're they're really sucking it up and and they're they're acting like young men and and they, they're willing to sacrifice if it means they get to perform. That's a coach you did take over as a Mount Airy's Head Boys basketball coach A. Prior to the 18 4019 season. Year three is coming up for you. So just what type of culture do you believe has been established under your watch? Um, well, I think that, you know, leave and I played ball together, all growing up, we played, you know, high school basketball together here in Mount Area, and so as an assistant for him. Hey, and I had a lot of the same beliefs. Um, and and the way that we ran our program were very similar. So the transition was very easy for us on for me. Um, because we both understand what it means to put on the Mount Airy jersey and performing to play. Um, at the level of excellence that we expect here. Um, so the transition you know was smooth, but, you know, the first year was a very rocky one for us. We finished last in conference, and you know it's difficult when there's a changing of the guard because you've got some new rules and you've got some new ideas offensively and defensively. Uh, you've got your your standards that you're trying to set within your program, and then the toughest part about it is getting your guys to buy into it as well. Um, and what that takes is is good guys in the locker room. You need strong leaders who are who believe in me and believe in what we're trying to do. And once you get buy in from those leaders, it's easy to get buy in from the other guys. Eso you know Brooks is, you know, entering his, uh, junior year. Brooks was with me as a freshman, his first, you know, my first year, his first year in high school, and so we've We've got some guys in our locker room now that have been with me through, you know, the bad times and then, you know, moving into our second year, we flipped the script a little bit We went from lasting conference and finished second last year behind Prep. So I think that what we're trying to instill in what we're trying to do is working. But we're not where we wanna be. Our goal entering the season each year is not gonna be to finish second behind prep or behind bishop or behind anybody. We want to be at the top of that list. Um, every year is often as possible. And I think we've got a good, solid group of guys, uh, that have bought into that and are are working hard to make it happen. That's a coach of Mount Airy. Finished in 2019, 2020 season with an overall record about 15 and 10. The Granite Bears did go seven and three, and the Northwest won a conference play and did make the postseason just take me through Last winners campaign From your perspective as head coach. Yes, sir. Um, if you look at our stats from last year, we didn't have any all stars. Andi, I love that. I know that. You know, most players in high school want to lead that stat sheet. But we had guys that were very well rounded. Last year, we had about four guys that averaged around 9 to 10 points. Um, we try to play team basketball here where we don't care who gets the credit. Uh, the end goal is that we win. Um, eso You know, we had a We had a pretty strong season last year. Definitely. Ah, step up from my first year here, um, had a pretty good showing in the Frank Spencer we lost to Glenn by one. It would have been really nice to make it to the state to the, uh, to the championship of the Spencer, um, Pepsi bracket. Two years in a row. But we lost out, but we responded well in and beat Walker Town in the third round. But conference play is tough. You know, I stay it year in and year out, and I think coaches in our conference would agree we we play in the toughest one, a conference in the state of North Carolina. There's no question about it. Um, for the past two years, every single team in our conference has made the state playoffs. Uh, even our first year, my first year when we were one and 11 or one in whatever we were, Um, we made the playoffs. And it's just a testament to the quality of play and players that air in this area and in this league. Um uh, in the, you know, finishing second got us a first round buying the conference tournament. We played East Surrey the second round and had a tough loss to them. We had a chance at the buzzer to tie. It missed on opportunity. Eso We went into the state playoffs at, uh, you know, 15 and nine, I believe and faced a really tough charitable team in. And, uh, I was really nervous about that matchup early on when I saw this period with them, especially after I had done some research. Uh uh. They had, you know, a really solid score. And then they had a really good point guard, and I thought we had a good game plan prepared. Um, but they they had a couple guys step up and perform well in addition to those other two guys. And I think that was the difference maker. Even even up to the final buzzer, we we we had the lead with like five seconds to go and they scored a bucket on the inbounds play to beat us by one. So it was a very tough loss. Um, you know, we thought that we could have made a little bit of a run last year, uh, into the state playoffs. But it was just heartbreaking, and especially for our seniors, because we played really hard that game and just didn't do enough defensively Thio to secure the wind. But, um, it was definitely a step in the right direction for us last year from my previous year. That's the next question is for you, Grant. The team was sort of riding high. They're winning four or five. Thio conclude the regular season, losing the story there and tournament, then a terrible at home and the playoffs. This coach just alluded to looking back. Now I just What are some things that you think went wrong? And those about two games as your junior hoop season came to a close? Um, e sorry was a extremely hard matchup, Even though they're ranked below us. They were really, really solid team with their leading scorer, Jeffrey Boaz, absolute him. He was the monster s O. That was one thing. E mean, they're just really solid. It was two solid teams when we faced up against them, and one team just played better that night. And Cherry Ville, it's honestly, still kinda leaves a bitter taste in all of our mouths. Ah, lot of people. Most of the guys that I know came and watched the film. There's like four or five minutes because it's just kind of heartbreaking. So e, it just leaves a sour taste in her mouth. And we want toe improve on and go farther than that last time because we don't we don't ever want to feel like that again. So just Sour took me a couple of weeks to break down that final film because I just didn't wanna watch it again. But, I mean, I can walk through it. So they had the really solid score at the last buzzer, and I just kind of they had a pin down screen for him. And me and Zeb Straw both doubled because our idea was we're gonna lose. We're gonna lose this someone besides their best player and their big man. Just like 90% teams have run this play just followed right behind the ball and got a wide open layup. So I've watched that four or five times and it's just yeah, if it came down to it, probably, yeah, play it the same way because it's the same way. Means it thought we're not gonna lose the other best player. So what else is going to beat us? So the next question is for both of you all I was able Thio be there for a senior night against East Surrey, which amount every 1. 61 48. I'm I talked thio y'all both as well as some of your teammates grant afterwards. And the consensus message was just how that was a confidence building result. Putting that a previous question aside about those two losses in the postseason. Just how important you think that victory waas over East Surrey? I'm obviously batteries biggest rival on the senior night for the boys basketball program moving forward and I coach because start with you. Yeah, absolutely. Um it was one of those wins I think is a coach. You have winds that stick out and and are always gonna be memorable for you, no matter how much time has elapsed between it. Um and that's gonna be one for the books. For me. Um, it was a special game because we needed to win to secure second place. The first and foremost we needed to win. And we thought we were capable of beating east. We had played them pretty solid at their place, but just had some bad possessions here and there. That really cost us in some bad runs where they really scored outscored us. But, um, what made it very special was we knew it was senior night. Um, and we knew it was a big game. And sometimes that could be difficult for a coach. If he's in a position where, you know you need a win, you need to compete well. But you also owe it to your seniors to give them that That light eso we echoed that week, you know, leading up to the game how important it was for us to get off to a good start with our seniors because, you know, we typically wouldn't start that lineup. And we had some plays design that we thought would cater to who we we, you know, had on the floor forest and and Hunter Locklear started us off with a big three right off the bat. And then we got some tip out run outs and jumped up on them. You know, Not nothing early or seven. Nothing early on DSO that was just really momentous for us. And I think that once once that happened, we never really looked back. It just it created a, um it's an energy for us that we fed off of that entire ballgame. Um, but it was special, you know. It was special, not only because of our seniors perform well, it was special not only because we beat East, but it was special because it secured second place for us, and it was going back to what I said earlier it was. It was a testament of the hard work in the Buy in that our guys were given to me into our program, that it's rewarding. You know, it's tough to get guys to buy in when you don't get some things to go your way. And so it was one of those nights where things went our way, and it just I think it really seals that idea that. Hey, what I'm telling you and what I'm asking you to do is worth it. Um, and and that was special. It was. It's tough that that was our last win of the season. But it's a it's a win that I'll always remember. E great. Do you have anything else to add to that? Um, not much. I understand. E wanna build on what Coach said when he said, when things weren't going our way. It's kind of hard to get going and building on the Senior Hunter LA Killer. When we first started out the season, Hunter had missed a bunch of practices and, uh, first day of actual practice. He came out and had a least 47 down in bags and 1000 push ups. And he did it. He didn't complain. I didn't say a word. He just went out and did it because we want to be part of the team, and that was that's looking back on it. I mean, that's really a huge momentum and motivation for all of us. The girl, no matter how bad, were down to keep kind of like fighting back and so having five seniors in the locker room, even though two of them were new to the team. They just They always worked hard, every single one of them everyday practice. They came in ready to work hard, and when they went out there and went up 90 against you, sir, it was just It was a huge momentum builder and it just carried on throughout the bench, all the way down to the last guy to the first guy off the bench were just 100% the entire game, so that was huge. That's a grant you did average 8.3 points on 53% shooting the field, plus 4.2 rebounds per game, is a junior. Just what strives to believe that you have made during this lengthy offseason to bump up those numbers in 2021? Um, as an integral I feel like I've, um, really worked on my poise and kind of grown into the team being an outsider. As a junior, it was hard to fit in. But this year we've got so many guys around me and I'm around them. We all support each other, one of us having a good game. Then we're gonna keep giving on the ball. Just like if I go off, we're gonna look for me. But if Kate and or Zeb brother pulling or holding any of the guys start feeling that night, we're all looking for them because there's 67 guys I could go off for 30 at any point. So that's our biggest strength as a team and as individuals. So it's a lot more than just one player. That's a coach, Uh, with five seniors graduating in the class of 2020. What type of leadership role do you expect I grant to take throughout the upcoming season? Well, you're seeing part of it right now. Um, when when you asked if one of our players could join in the interview, my thoughts immediately went to my three seniors, um, holding Poindexter, Peyton Harmon and then Grant Ruth. Um, and I let them decide who was gonna be the player that was going to join us on. I expect all three of them to serve for captains are as captains for us this year. Um, all three of them bring great leadership qualities into our locker room and onto our floor. Um, but in different ways, Um, holding in and Peyton are a little bit more quiet on the court in the locker room, whereas grants a little bit more out spoken, and we need Grant to be out spoken. We need him to be a vocal leader. Holding and Peyton are great young men. They both will lead really well by example. Um, Peyton is probably one of the most self selfless players I've ever coached. Um, he's gonna be the first guy that's going to take a charge. He's gonna be one of the first guys that hits the four for us. Holding is a remarkable, remarkable story. Um, we didn't have him last season overcoming back surgery and to be back and better than ever holding his poised to be a great leader for us. So I think that we've got three great seniors. Um, all of whom bring really wonderful leadership qualities to our program. Onda, we're gonna need all three of them toe lead for us, whether it be vocally or by example. Andi, we've got a solid group of three that we're going to do that for us. Is leaders it? That's the coach Just who are some other players outside of Grant you're expecting, too? I played vital roles for the granite bears, Um, during the 24,021 season. I know you just mentioned a couple of seniors, but kind of elaborate on that. Yes, sir. So in addition to our three seniors, we've got three, um, juniors returning from last year's team that saw significant time. I'll start with Brooke Sizemore. I talked about him a little bit earlier. He's gonna be our point guard shooting guard. Brooks's. This is his third years. A varsity player? Um, he's seasoned. He's been in the fire. He's had good games. He's had bad games. Um, but we're expecting Brooks to be a leader from a point guard position for us. He's a tremendous shooter, and he's got a very high basketball I Q. We also have Caden. Fitz Gibbon's Kaden was an all conference player for us last year. Um, he was our leading scorer last year. Caden is a tremendous defender. Um, he's got great length. He's a really good rim finisher, and he's also put in a lot of work this off season on his jump shot he's improved his mid range and his three point shooting as well on. But we've also got Zips drop, who is a returning player. Zeb probably didn't play as much last year. Is the other five have that? I have coming back solid, But Zeb has probably made the most improvements, Um, individually, with regards to his ability to finish at the rim. He is jumping out of the gym right now with his athleticism. He's a smart young man. He's got great vision, you know. He plays quarterback as well, in addition to hold. And so, uh, for our football team, Zeb, the kind of guy that can get a rebound, a czar, center and run our fast break and scores in transition. So he's a very difficult matchup. Um, and then, in addition to those six, we've got a Reese Deaton, who is a point guard coming up from the JV squad, who will, who will back up? Brooks Reese has got a motor, and he's one of our best defenders. Uh, we've got Devon Joyce, who is Ah, rising Junior, who had a really solid year last year, is a This is J V sophomore and then we've got a freshman that we've pulled up the varsity as well. Pilo, Mason, Uh, Tyler is a has got a great body. Is build is tremendous. He's extremely athletic. He's a good finisher at the rim. Um, we're developing his jump shot Maurin Maury each day. Um, but, you know, I think that one strength of ours this year is gonna be our depth on the bench. That's not something that we've been privy to in the previous two years. Um, you know, and it hold, it helps you have holding guys accountable. You know, if you start five guys and you know, if that guy knows that there's somebody just chomping at the bit on the bench ready to come in and and take his time, it really holds that guy accountable. Um, and not only in games, but in practice is well, so the competition level has been tremendous and practice for us. A zit should be, um and we're hoping that that's gonna just make us better every single day. But we're ready to start competing to get some other people. This is speaking of competing against other people. Ah, coach of the non conference slate includes Reagan North Davidson, a Salem Baptist and Equality Education Academy. Eso Those last two teams have more than a few games under their belt right now. Just take us through how Cove in 19 impacted the granite bears out of league slate. And just how your team, I might handle some of those non conference matchups. Okay. Yeah, well, let me start with this. Is the schedule that we're getting ready to play is the second one that we way developed this offseason. You know, our first one? We had 23 games, uh, playing in the Frank Spencer, uh, playing in another holiday tournament. Um, on. Do you know it was It's tough to schedule. Ah, basketball season. Um, it's even tougher when you got to do it twice in one year. Especially when people start filling up. So one thing that made it difficult the second time around scheduling was the conference limitations. So North story, for example, their whole their whole season is conference play. Um, same for three central and some of them. So? So some of the normal people and programs that we would compete and play against were automatically pull with 14 game restriction. And so what that made us have to do is reach out. You know, Thio, people outside of our area, uh, teams that we might not typically have have reached out to, um, we had I talked to Coach Gould at Q B A. We had them scheduled, no matter what. I wanted to make sure that we got an opportunity to compete and play against those guys. So we did have them in the original schedule. We were fortunate that that he was able to still honor and play us a game this year, but then picking up Salem Baptist. That's somebody that we picked up through playing in the fall league with Blue Chip. Um, they've got a great facility down there on a really strong program. And so one thing that I will always told all guys and doing our program is I won't schedule cupcakes. I don't believe in doing that because I don't believe it prepares you for conference play. And I definitely don't believe it prepares you for state playoff play. Um, so I told our guys always honest with him and said, Look, if I got, I'm gonna schedule us away. Eso that were in their place. I'm gonna I'm gonna try to reach out to some teams that I know are solid and because I wanna I believe if you're gonna be the man, you gotta beat the man right at old bricklayer saying So, uh, I wanna know who our guys are. And I don't think that we find out who our guys are playing cupcakes. So I want to play the best. I wanna compete against the best. And if it means we get whooped and we get walked, we'll learn from it. We'll watch the film and we'll grow. But one thing I'm trying to do with our program is getting to the point where we're not afraid of people. I don't wanna be afraid of playing. Uh huh, Winston Salem Prep or Bishop or Q E A or anybody, whether it's one a two a three or four a. I don't want our guys to fear. I want them to trust in their abilities. I want them to trust in their coaching, and and I want them to believe that they can always step on the floor and compete. So, um, I might eat my words right now when we start playing next week. But you know, like you said, there's a couple of those teams that have games under their belt. Uh, you know, we know that Cuba is gonna be solid. We know that Salem Baptist is gonna be solid and they've got experience. So that's gonna fall on me to have a good game plan. It's gonna follow in our guys to execute our game plan into play, um, un selfish Andi and Rule number one. When you when you go to play even if you don't have all the X's and O's straight is you, you play hard and you compete on. If you could do that, good things can happen even if you don't have excess and those where they need to be it, That's the next question is, after both of y'all and Grant, we could start with you. The Northwest one day conference features six teams, and all six did make the postseason in 2019. 2020. Bishop McGuinness, SRE a Mount, Airy North Stoke Staff Stokes and with Salem Prep are those six schools eso grant just what is competition like night in night, out for those who may not be as familiar with the conference. Um, well, coming in. I wasn't familiar. I've always heard stories because I came in from a smaller school. Our stories of the one I converse being one of the toughest conferences to play, and with the schools that you just mentioned and when we first started conference play coach has brought us down and I'll tell us that the game we just played doesn't matter. Doesn't matter that we just went positive before conference play were 00 right now, and this will be the toughest games that you play. Um, and it was he wasn't lying. We went out started. I can remember we played off our season opener, but it was just a completely different experience because there's a Each game is like a rivalry. Honestly, all the gyms are always packed, and it's just an atmosphere that you don't get anywhere else. I haven't seen any other conference e. When you go out and you have toe, if you don't play your best and you don't play like dogs like we dio, you're liable to get ran out the gym, so it's honestly, it's kind of I just lost my train of thought, but there's nothing like it. Honestly, there's not a conference in the state of one. A honest, that's you're gonna find this level of competition. So yes, coaching meeting at the at the wall. Uh, yeah, the first things first. I think that, you know, not only are there great players in our conference, but there are really, really great coaches in our conference. Um, you know, the players air. Just a reflection of the coaches. If you look back at the State championships one at the one a level over the past decade, probably eight or nine of them came from our conference, Um, you know whether it was prep for Bishop. Um, you know, there are solid players, but there are solid coaches in our league. And so each night in conference is a dog fight because we know each other well, we every coach, scouts, well, um, and everybody wants to win, you know, and it's a tough conference, but it's it's good for all of our programs in this conference because it really prepares us for those runs in the state playoffs. Um, it's it's kind of a downer that sometimes we get faced, you know, paired with each other. Like, you know, a couple years ago we played Bishop first round a couple a couple years in a row, and you know it's tough when you've already played each other so many times to turn right around in the state playoffs. And you know that your program is solid and can compete against other schools. But then you gotta play somebody that already knows you, and and so that's that's tough. But that's that's just something that comes with all six making the playoffs. But, um, good players and good coaches in this area, for sure it Grant, Do you have any personal or team goals for the upcoming season? Um, our team goal is on to win a state championship. That's all of it going in. That's our mindset. But we all realize that we have to start out with our four nonconference games and then take care of our business and conference. And after we do all that, then we start looking ahead. We're gonna take it each. We're gonna take it one game at a time. So last question of the interview is for your coaching to say I fill in the blank from Mount Area to my success and it's shorten. 24,021 season Blank needs to happen. That's a tough one. Unselfishness. We have to be unselfish because, like we've talked about in this interview, we've got guys that before we've got guys that can play. Um, there's gonna be some nights where grants Hot and Brooks is hot. And then other nights where Caden and Holding or Hot or Peyton and said We're having tremendous games and so we have to be willing to play unselfishly and not care who gets the credit as long as we get the W at the end of the at the end of the game. Um, if we could do that, if we can play unselfishly and move the basketball well and and feed the hot hand will be a tough team to beat. But if we play selfishly and if we get caught up with how many points did I score or you know, playing this stat game, we will crumble. So, um, I hope that our guys understand that it's something that we've definitely been talking about reaching to them already is to play on Selfish, you know, play for your team, mate. Play hard, play smart, play together. You know the old Dean Smith motto. Um, that's hanging on our locker room wall right now, and it will always be there as long as I'm here, play hard, play smart, play together. And if we could do those three, those three things with the emphasis being on the play together and being unselfish, we could be a good team.

Mount Airy, N.C. — Mount Airy took a tremendous leap forward in its 2019-20 basketball campaign.
Just one calendar year before, the Granite Bears were 7-16 overall and had one conference victory. Mount Airy flipped that into winning 15 games (15-10, 7-3 record) and finishing second in the league’s standings when the regular season came to a close.
The Northwest 1A Conference is ultra-competitive each year, but Mount Airy finished behind only Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy — eventual co-state champion at the 1A level — in 2019-20. The Granite Bears’ three conference defeats came against the Phoenix (twice) and East Surry (once) during the 10-game stretch.
