BANGKOK, May 21 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Flimsy shacks of tin and ply have given way to sleek, painted newbuilds - small, clean and leak-free - in Bangkok’s biggest slum, creating model homes and a blueprint for city development.
That’s if community leader Surawat Krabsomboon and other residents can defeat plans to bulldoze much of Klong Toey slum and make way for the sort of gentrification transforming the Thai capital.
“We were living in broken houses and were unable to afford to repair the houses,” Krabsomboon told the Thomson Reuters Foundation from his home in the city’s oldest slum. ....

Australia reviewing lease of Darwin port to Chinese firm - source

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia is reviewing the 99-year lease of a commercial and military port in the country’s north to a Chinese firm, a government source said on Monday, a move that could further inflame tensions between Beijing and Canberra.

Australia overhauled its foreign investment laws late last year, giving the government the retrospective power to impose new conditions or even force a divestment on deals that have already been approved.
Defence officials are looking into whether the Landbridge Group, which is owned by Chinese billionaire Ye Cheng, should be forced to give up its ownership of Darwin Port on national security grounds, the source told Reuters. ....

Abu Dhabi Ports raises $1 billion loan, sources say

DUBAI (Reuters) - Abu Dhabi Ports, which owns and operates 11 ports and terminals in the United Arab Emirates and Guinea, has secured a $1 billion loan with a group of banks, two sources said.
Nine banks provided the facility, with Citi and First Abu Dhabi Bank having lead roles in the transaction, the first source said on condition of anonymity.
The source added that HSBC and Standard Chartered were also involved in the loan for the company, which is owned by Abu Dhabi state holding company ADQ. ....
