Issue raised of CSOs after hours calls

In response, City Director of Protective Services Lindsay Holm said he had spoken with the individual that afternoon and noted an issue regarding calls, and particular how calls are taken after hours.
Holm noted that calls during the after hours time would be answered by the provincial call centre or dispatch center. Holm said he would review the issue with their dispatch centre to make sure those calls aren’t being dropped off. If it is something that needs to be handled by the RCMP, they will make sure those calls are directed to them.
“I want to make sure that if they are experiencing something like that that they get the service they require,” said Holm. ....

He wondered if BHA had worked with the fire department on developing their needle pickup program. He also wondered whether that daily needle pickup had influenced the recent drop in numbers reported by the fire department, given that Holm had reported needle pickups throughout the city had dropped to 2,046 in 2020, down from 11,126 the year before.
On the second question, Holm acknowledged “it can have a dramatic effect on the numbers. So, as we get more and more people dealing with needles on their own, we will see a drop in our numbers without a doubt, because if they are retrieving needles on their own, they have no obligation to report that to me. So … as more and more people are able to deal with needles on their own, we will see some drops in numbers and it’s something I am expecting.” ....

CSO program under review

The idea behind the document is to make sure the level of service of the CSOs meets the expectations of the community at large. According to the memo from Director of Protective Services Lindsay Holm, the goal of this document is “to summarize the types of services being provided by the CSOs, list any constraints, and determine the financial resources required to meet these service levels.”
“Now we’ve got something that sets the bar for our citizens and now we can measure against that, see if we’re meeting that,” Holm said at the meeting.
The document was put together through interviews with staff, several meetings and ride-alongs. The draft statement is described as a “living document” subject to change. ....
