Deb Haaland became the Secretary of the Interior after a confirmation vote of 51-40 in early March, picking up votes from every Democrat in attendance and Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Dan Sullivan (Alaska), Susan Collins (Maine) and Lindsey Graham (S.C.).
Haaland, a former member of Congress for New Mexico and a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, is now the first Native American to helm the Department of the Interior, which encompasses the Bureau of Indian Affairs and is responsible for the conservation of federal lands across the country.

Deb Haaland confirmed as first Indigenous US cabinet secretary

She will lead about 70,000 staff who oversee one-fifth of all the land in the US and 1.7bn acres of coastlines, as well as managing national parks, wildlife refuges and natural resources such as gas, oil and water.
Haaland will also be responsible for upholding the government’s legally binding obligations to the tribes – treaty obligations that have been systematically violated with devastating consequences for life expectancy, exposure to environmental hazards, political participation and economic opportunities in Indian Country.
According to the 2010 census, 5.2 million people or about 2% of the US population identifies as American Indian or Alaskan Native – descendants of those who survived US government policies to kill, remove or assimilate indigenous peoples.

Lummis Pledges to Keep Fighting for Wyoming After Haaland Confirmation Vote – Sheridan Media

Following the Senate’s vote to confirm Representative Deb Haaland to serve as Secretary of the Interior, Senator Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming pledged to keep fighting for Wyoming’s land and energy needs. Of the vote, Sen. Lummis said:
“While I love the particular charms of Wyoming winters, this weekend’s historic snowstorm has kept me from returning to Washington, D.C. to vote on the confirmation of Representative Deb Haaland. While Democrats in the Majority had the votes to confirm her as Secretary of the Interior, I’ve been proud to be a leading voice in opposition to Representative Haaland’s confirmation and the anti-energy, anti-jobs agenda for which she advocates. It is my hope that Rep. Haaland has heard, and taken to heart, the very real concerns of states like Wyoming that rely on energy production and use of public lands for our livelihoods. I will continue to fight at every turn against efforts from Rep. Haaland and the Biden Administration that seek to undermine Wyoming jobs and communities.”

Deb Haaland Confirmed as First Native American Cabinet Secretary

Haaland, an enrolled member of the Laguna Pueblo, earned bipartisan support to run the Interior department, which has a staff of 70,000 employees and is charged with overseeing the country's natural resources. The agency manages nearly 500 million acres of land, or one-fifth of the surface area of the United States.
Haaland's confirmation fills one of the few remaining vacancies in Biden's Cabinet, nearly two months after he was sworn in. With most of the major posts now occupied, the outstanding positions include United States trade representative, Labor secretary, and Health and Human Services secretary.
"We've now made history twice in the last few minutes," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said after the vote, noting that Haaland was the first Native American Interior secretary as well as the first Native American Cabinet secretary.

WASHINGTON—U.S. Rep. Debra Haaland made history on Monday when she became the first Native American to ever be confirmed by the U.S. Senate to hold a position in a president’s Cabinet.
In a narrow 51-40 vote, senators confirmed Haaland, a New Mexico Democrat, to serve as secretary of Interior, where she will run a $21 billion agency that manages more than 450 million acres of public lands—as well as the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
She was backed by four Republican senators: Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Susan Collins of Maine, and Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.
