Tax, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll by Damian Corless: How a land of police and priests became cool Hibernia

Anybody under the illusion that Ireland is a sort of paradise for wealthy tax exiles might want to think about Leslie Charteris. The writer of The Saint, the hugely popular Roger Moore TV series, he moved here in the 1970s to avoid paying a fortune to HM Revenue & Customs but had a thoroughly miserable time among the burghers of south Dublin. Why on earth, he asked, would anyone live in Ireland if they didn’t have to.

This is How You Remember It by Catherine Prasifka review: how a generation was eaten by the internet

Once upon a time, our internet identities used to be completely separate from our real-life, 3D selves. The internet was a phenomenon emitted from the family PC, in the family computer room. We accessed our internet lives in short, finite bursts. We logged on after school to chat to each other on MSN. We created and played and explored on websites that seem in retrospect laughably quaint and innocent: Neopets, Harry Potter, Miniclip.

Simon Delaney on Lyric FM: 'I'm in the chair Gay Byrne sat in. That isn't lost on me'

As with the history of Irish broadcasting in general, so with the career of Simon Delaney: the totemic figure of Gay Byrne casts a long shadow. Lately in situ as host of the eponymous Sunday Afternoon with… on Lyric FM, some of his earliest memories are being in the kitchen with his mother, “the radio on, listening to Gaybo”.

New Irish Writing short story: Monster by Vincent Barton

Brian dropped the Gourmet Night Dinner for One on to the kitchen worktop and snorted. Remove the Ezi-Peel protective film. My arse. He stared at the microwaveable tray for a moment and then pressed his thumbnail down through the clear film. It popped satisfyingly and he slid his thumb left and right to cut open the cover on his supper. He lifted the plastic sheet off, dropping it neatly into the recycling bin, and put the food into the microwave. Cook for four minutes, let stand for 60 seconds, stir, then give a final minute cooking to ensure it is heated through. Classy, he thought. But then, that’s how half the restaurants in town do it now, I suppose.

Rick O'Shea: Put your beach towel away, you will want to stay in to read these

I recently heard someone expound the theory that who you are when you are eight years old defines you for the rest of your life. “Piffle,” I thought.

Pet Shop Boys show their pristine craft in new electro-pop album infused with melancholia

Forty years ago this month, Pet Shop Boys released their debut single. West End Girls disappeared without trace. The synth-pop song produced by Bobby Orlando just didn’t connect with buyers of seven-inch singles.

Rick O'Shea: Reading about the world coming to a halt is way better than the reality

My social media feeds have recently reminded me of photos I took and things I posted online four years ago in the first few weeks of lockdown after the world came shuddering to a halt.

Robert Ballagh: 'My cancer is back after 13 years'

In the catalogue for his latest solo exhibition, Robert Ballagh is described as “a public artist”. It is the perfect summation of a man whose work has been central to Irish life for decades and who has managed the rare feat of being both a living artist and a household name.
