Search party had recovered fragments from the vessel.
An Indonesian submarine that went missing off the coast of Bali has sunk, the country's navy said Saturday, dashing hopes that its 53 crew would be saved.
The navy's chief said a search party had recovered fragments from the KRI Nanggala 402 including items from inside the vessel, whose oxygen reserves were already believed to have run out.
Warships, planes and hundreds of military personnel have been searching for the stricken vessel. Authorities had said the German-built craft was equipped with enough oxygen for only three days after losing power.

Indonesia has put its rescue aircraft and ships to scour the sea north of Bali to hunt for the 44-year old KRI Nanggala-402 submarine that went missing on Wednesday.
Contact with the German-built vessel carrying 53 crew members aboard was lost when it was preparing to conduct a torpedo drill. Oxygen levels in the submarine is expected to run out within 24 hours.
The Navy has said a blackout may have occurred during static diving, causing a loss of control and preventing emergency procedures from being carried out.

The Indian Navy on Thursday dispatched its Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV) to help the Indonesian Navy in search and rescue operations for the Indonesian submarine, KRI Nanggala, with 53 sailors onboard, which went missing during a torpedo drill on Wednesday.
The DSRV is a special vessel that handles such tasks.
“On April 21, an alert was received by the Indian Navy through International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office (ISMERLO), regarding the missing Indonesian submarine. The submarine was reportedly exercising in a location 25 miles north of Bali with a crew of 53 personnel,” the Indian Navy said.
Submarine rescue is required when a submarine is reported missing and special equipment is needed for underwater search to locate the disabled watercraft and rescue the personnel trapped inside.
