Altuve, Bregman, Alvarez go on injured list

HOUSTON -- The Astros were without second baseman Jose Altuve, third baseman Alex Bregman, designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, catcher Martín Maldonado and utility infielder Robel García for Wednesday’s game against the Tigers after they were placed on the injured list.
Astros general manager James Click said the five players were put on the IL “as a result of the health and safety protocols,” meaning they could return once they are cleared. There is no minimum stay for players who are placed on the COVID-19 IL, and Click said how long the players are out will depend on subsequent testing.

REMEMBERING JACKIE
All players, managers, coaches and umpires will wear No. 42 to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day, marking the anniversary of the date the Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Famer made his Major League Baseball debut and broke the sport’s color barrier in 1947.
A video produced by MLB Network titled “Thank You, Jackie” narrated by former star Curtis Granderson will present Robinson’s impact as a champion on and off the field and be shown at ballparks. Teams that are off Thursday will honor Robinson when they play Friday.

Astros 2021 Opening Day roster

There were no surprises when the Astros set their 26-man roster prior to Thursday's season opener against the A's in Oakland. The Astros, as expected, will carry 13 pitchers and 13 position players, including six players who are appearing on an Opening Day roster for the first time: right-handers Brandon Bielak, Luis Garcia and José Uruidy, infielder Robel García, outfielder Chas McCormick and designated hitter Yordan Alvarez.
The Astros also set their taxi squad for the first road trip of the season: right-handers Ralph Garza Jr., Nivaldo Rodriguez and Peter Solomon, infielder Abraham Toro and catcher Garrett Stubbs. The club opens the season with four games in Oakland beginning Thursday and then travel to Anaheim for two against the Angels on Monday and Tuesday.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- We’re less than three weeks away from Opening Day and things have been interesting at Astros' camp, where an injury to a frontline starter (Framber Valdez) and a top prospect (Forrest Whitley) have made headlines, as well as the acquisition of starter Jake Odorizzi and the news of eight pitchers being sent to quarantine for health and safety reasons.

AL West outlook at infield corners in '21

Corner infield is an area of strength in the American League West, especially at third base, as it features stars such as the Angels’ Anthony Rendon, the Athletics’ Matt Chapman and the Astros’ Alex Bregman.
Rendon, Chapman and Bregman are among the best in the game at their position, bringing excitement both offensively and defensively. At first base, there are more unknowns in the division, although Oakland boasts slugger Matt Olson and Houston has veteran Yuli Gurriel.

The Angels are set at third base after signing Anthony Rendon to a seven-year deal last season, but first base is more of a question mark. Jared Walsh is coming off a breakout rookie season offensively and figures to share first-base duties with veteran Albert Pujols. Rendon was recently ranked as the No. 1 third baseman in the Majors and will be backed up by a utility player such as Robel García or Franklin Barreto. Second baseman David Fletcher could also shift to third on days when Rendon needs a break. Walsh, a left-handed hitter, is expected to get most of the starts against right-handed pitchers, with Pujols likely to start against lefties. Pujols, 41, is in the final year of his 10-year contract with the Angels.
