Uganda opposition leader withdraws Supreme Court election petition - JURIST - News

February 24, 2021 11:38:41 am
Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulani, also known as Bobi Wine, on Monday withdrew an election petition challenging the re-election of Yoweri Museveni. Kyagulani cited frustrations with the Supreme Court as the reason for his withdrawal, claiming that the Supreme Court justices hearing the case were biased.
In January’s presidential election, Museveni won his sixth term after garnering 59 percent of the votes against Wine’s 35 percent. Wine subsequently filed a challenge to these results, citing several grounds. Principally, he alleged that force had been used against his supporters, with the run-up to the vote marred by violence. The Uganda Communications Commission had also banned more than 100 social media platforms and messaging apps during the election.

Uganda opposition leader asks court to cancel presidential election results - JURIST - News

February 1, 2021 02:18:30 pm
Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine filed a challenge Monday in the country’s Supreme Court seeking the cancellation of presidential election results declaring incumbent President Yoweri Museveni the winner.
Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulani, asked the International Criminal Court last month to investigate Museveni, Security Minister Elly Tumwine and eight other senior officials for sanctioning human rights abuses.
Wine ran against Museveni in the January 14 presidential election. Museveni, who has served as president since 1986, was declared the winner of the 2021 presidential election with 59 percent of votes, while Wine had 35 percent. Wine was placed on house arrest following the election. On January 25, a Ugandan court ordered security forces to stop surrounding his home and blocking him from leaving.

Uganda court orders security forces to stop surrounding home of opposition leader - JURIST - News

January 25, 2021 12:20:28 pm
A Ugandan court on Monday ordered security forces to stop surrounding the home of opposition leader Bobi Wine. Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulani, has been under house arrest since the January 14 presidential election.
In November Wine was detained for allegedly violating the government’s COVID-19 rules by holding political rallies. His detention sparked violent protests in which 37 individuals died. He was released on bail later in November.
On January 7, Wine asked the International Criminal Court to investigate President Yoweri Museveni, Security Minister Elly Tumwine and eight other senior officials for sanctioning human rights abuses. In the January 14 election, Wine ran against incumbent President Museveni. After Wine voted in the election, security forces blocked Wine from leaving his house.

Ugandan soldiers stood down their positions around the residence of opposition leader Bobi Wine on Tuesday, a day after a court ordered an end to the confinement of the presidential runner-up.
Wine, a popstar-turned-MP whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, had been under de-facto house arrest at his home outside the capital Kampala since he returned from voting in January 14's election.
For 11 days heavily armed soldiers and police officers surrounding the property had prevented members of Wine's household, including his wife Barbie, from leaving their compound, as well as denying access to visitors.
