`Misunderstood' and hoping to shed toxic image, Brockhouse rides again in San Antonio mayoral contest

`Misunderstood' and hoping to shed toxic image, Brockhouse rides again in San Antonio mayoral contest

Bouncy like an athletic TED-talker, Greg Brockhouse is objectively handsome, with just the right amount of gray in his hair, often wearing jeans and his HOKA running shoes at campaign events along with T-shirts that yell, “GREG FOR MAYOR.”
Brockhouse also is one of San Antonio’s most divisive public figures. To challenge Mayor Ron Nirenberg in the May 1 election, he has rolled out a more reflective persona and some dense policy initiatives, but his campaign formula is still heavy on name-calling, conservative talking points and raw grievance.

The Alamo Cenotaph and Alamo Street, shown in a June photograph, were topics of discussion and action Wednesday night by the Alamo Citizen Advisory Committee. The panel supported keeping the Cenotaph in place and initiating a repair plan, and endorsed closing a section of the street, between Houston and Crockett streets, that is in the historic mission-fort footprint.William Luther /Staff
The revamped Alamo Plaza renovation plan is gaining speed after nearly half a year of inaction, winning another round of support — this time from the Alamo Citizen Advisory Committee.

Officials with two major COVID-19 vaccine providers in San Antonio say they aren’t convinced the city needs a one-stop sign-up portal for people trying to schedule vaccinations.
San Antonio is the only major Texas city without some form of a vaccine registry. Other major cities including Austin, Houston and Dallas have systems that allow residents to sign up and be notified later when an appointment becomes available.

Freezing on the streets: San Antonio cleared homeless camps 151 times during pandemic

Freezing on the streets
In a city lacking stable housing for the homeless, February's record cold exposed the vulnerability — and shortage of options — for those living in a tent camp under Interstate 37.

Under the Interstate 37 overpass on the north side of downtown, Leslie Hester dug through her tent for a washcloth and bottle of water.
Still huddled in her sleeping bag, she poured frigid water onto the cloth to wipe her face. Outside, the air was thick with smoke from a campfire a friend had built with scrap wood. Tears from the smoke pooled in their eyes.

The Alamo Plaza redevelopment must tell the complete story of the Alamo, including the role of slavery and the myth-making that followed the famous 1836 battle.William Luther / Staff file photo
After years of stops, starts, setbacks and disappointment, Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s call this week for modifications to the Alamo Plaza redevelopment plan holds enormous potential.
Nirenberg’s “reset” promises to get the besieged project completed.
We can hope.
While the city’s plan is still to improve and expand the historic site, perhaps it might do so more modestly while telling the complete story of the Alamo.

In 1887, San Antonio architect Alfred Giles designed a 163-foot monument for Alamo Plaza meant to honor the memory of the Alamo defenders who had died 51 years earlier in the legendary battle for Texas independence.
Giles envisioned a monument made of granite, marble, steel and reinforced concrete. The Alamo Monument Association approved it and a fundraising campaign raised $25,000, a pretty hefty sum at the time.
