Broken parts in the seismic joint. Caltran says an inspection on may 15 uncovered the problem on the newer part of the bridge. Seismic joints absorbed movement, and had been under scrutiny, when crews first noticed a clanking sound on the northern joint from an offcenter pin. They discovered parts of the northern joint were cracked, and off center. One of the joints 90 pivot pins is damaged, and has slipped off its bearing. Also a plastic stirrup is cracked.
