Costly, quiet, clean and lonely: How the 'COVID Olympics' are different for our athletes - 04-Aug-2021

Costly, quiet, clean and lonely: How the 'COVID Olympics' are different for our athletes
Competing at the Olympic Games in a pandemic has been an unusual experience for these Aussie athletes.
4 August 2021
The coronavirus pandemic has made the Tokyo Olympics like no other – devoid of most of the fanfare and festivities that make the quadrennial event a celebration of sport and the international community.
They're also on track to become the most expensive summer games ever — a bitter pill to swallow for the Japanese public who helped pay for it, but haven't been able to enjoy it fully.
The one-year delay cost an estimated $US3 billion ($4.054 billion), and Jack Anderson, a professor of sports law at Melbourne University, said the total bill had soared.

Athletes spend years, decades even, to appear and perform at the Olympic Games. For some though, the entire experience can be over inside six minutes.
27 July 2021
The Olympic dream can be cruel. You might achieve it, but it might not be as you imagined.
With that in mind, you've got to feel for the Marton-Khalil family from the sport of taekwondo.
Between them, they have been to seven Olympic Games, and their total time on the mat in Tokyo has amounted to 12 minutes.

Marton to miss out on the Olympics after selectors rejected her appeal

Sunday, 18 July 2021
Selectors for Australia’s taekwondo team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics have rejected the appeal of former world champion Carmen Marton against her non-inclusion.
According to
7News, Marton took her case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after her initial appeal was rejected.
However, CAS have confirmed that Marton's appeal was dismissed on July 5, and said the grounds for its decision would be issued in the coming days.
Australian Taekwondo has stuck with its initial decision and chosen 22-year-old Stacey Hymer for the women’s featherweight class.
Thirty-five year-old Marton was hoping to compete at her fourth consecutive Olympic Games.
