Cunningham Named National Indoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year; 19 Noles Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. - 19 Florida State track and field athletes were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Wednesday afternoon. 10 women and nine men were named to the team. Four athletes accomplished a 4.00 GPA for the spring semester. I'm very proud of all of our athletes on this list. We have had great academic success over the years in our program, and this year was no different, Head Coach Bob Braman said. On the women's side, three athletes recorded 4.0 GPA's. CoSIDA Academic All-Americans Maudie Skyring and Ruby Stauber were each named to the list. Stauber is getting her masters in sport management while Skyring is pursuing her degree in exercise physiology. Alyson Churchill also had a 4.0 during the spring as she pursues her degrees in psychology and international affairs. Three more Seminoles, Amanda Beach, Ka'Tia Seymour and Sara Zabarino, each earned a 3.9 GPA or higher. Among the 10 athletes who were named to the team, eight of them earned a 3.7 GPA or higher. On the men's side, Matt Owens led the way with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Owens is pursuing his degree in public health. Owens qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary in the 3000m steeplechase. Silas Griffith had the second-best GPA among the group with a GPA of 3.938 in his pursuit of a degree in social work. The ACC indoor and outdoor scholar-athlete of the year, Trey Cunningham and Caleb Pottorff each finished the semester with a 3.667 GPA. Cunningham is pursuing his masters in Sport Management. Zabarino Earns First-Team All-America Honors in the Javelin

EUGENE, Ore. -    The 4x100m relay began the night off with a bang with a record-breaking performance. Edidiong Odiong, Savy'on Toombs, Ka'Tia Seymour and Ashley Seymour combined to break the ACC record and the 29-year-old school record with a time of 42.78. The Noles had the fifth-fastest time of the three heats and finished second in their heat to automatically qualify for the finals. The finals will take place on Saturday at 5:32 p.m. on ESPN.

Nwanaga and Zabarino Qualify for NCAA Championships in the Javelin

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Florida State track and field team punched two more tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships Thursday afternoon at the NCAA East Preliminary in Bloomington, Ind.  Our ladies had a really good day today. Obviously, the highlight was our two javelin throwers punching their ticket, but our sprinters had a fantastic day along with solid performances from Ruby [Stauber] and Maudie [Skyring]. Kelechi Nwanaga and Sara Zabarino will return to Eugene in the javelin after they each posted a top five finish in the event. Nwanaga posted a solid mark on her first of three throws with a mark of 54.72m to finish second. That mark was Nwanga’s best mark since Mar. 24 at the FSU Relays where she threw a personal best 55.06m. Zabarino posted a solid mark of 52.16m to finish fifth in the event.  The Noles had a great day of qualifying on the track. Edidiong Odiong, Ashley Seymour and Ka’Tia Seymour each qualified for Saturday’s quarterfinal in the 100m dash. Odiong ran 11.28 to win her heat and clock the seventh-best time of the day. Ka’Tia Seymour ran a season-best 11.32, and Ashley Seymour ran a personal best 11.43 to each solidify their spots in Saturday’s quarterfinal. Odiong (22.65) and Ka’Tia Seymour (23.26) finished fifth and 20th, respectively to advance to the quarterfinals of the 200m dash. Skyring ran a 4:17.43 in the 1500m run, and Stauber ran a 2:05.06 in the 800m to move on to Saturday’s quarterfinal race.  The men will be back in action tomorrow with the men’s discus beginning at 1 p.m. Running events will begin at 5 p.m.at the 4x100m relay. Three Noles Crowned ACC Champions on Day One of ACC Championships

DURHAM, N.C. - The Florida State track and field team got off to a terrific start Thursday at the ACC Outdoor Championships. Isaac Grimes (long jump), Lauren Ryan (10,000m run) and Ahmed Muhumed (10,000m run) each took home ACC titles on the first day of competition. The men currently lead the team standings with 33 points while the women are fourth with 24 points. Grimes led a trio of FSU jumpers in the long jump competition. The Noles went first, second and fourth in the event to score 23 points in a single event. Grimes won the event with a season-best and facility record mark of 8.05m. Jeremiah Davis finished second with a mark of 7.96m and Jacore Irving finished fourth with a personal best mark of 7.83m. The distance group shined late into the night, as Lauren Ryan ran away with the 10,000m run title by nearly 26 seconds. This was the first time Ryan has ran the 10,000m run in competition and moved to No. 3 on FSU's all-time list with a time of 32:56.53. Ahmed Muhumed used a 56 second final 400 meters in the 10,000m run to take the title in a downpour. Muhumed broke the meet record with a time of 28:48.69 to move to No. 6 all-time in FSU history. This was Muhumed's first ACC title, and he is the first Nole to win an ACC title in the 10,000m run since Breandan O'Reilly in 2013. Sara Zabarino broke the school record in the javelin with a mark of 55.66m to finish second in the event. Kelechi Nwanaga finished third with a mark of 52.10m In preliminary action, Edidiong Odiong ran a phenomenal 200m dash, clocking a personal best 22.83 to move to No. 8 on FSU's all-time list and take the top qualifying time into Saturday's final race. In the 400m hurdles, Ava Klein (1:00.87) advanced to the finals on the women's side while James Rivera (52.02) also advanced to Saturday's final. In the men's 200m dash, Amir Willis qualified with a time of 20.76. Maudie Skyring (4:22.66) and Jen Lima (4:23.16) each advanced to the final in the women's 1500m run. Sam Field (3:49.69) advanced to the final as well. Riley Ott competed in the first five events of the decathlon and posted personal bests in three of those events. He currently sits in third with a score of 3865. Action will continue tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the decathlon. ACC Network Extra will once again have coverage. Zabarino Takes Javelin Title at Crimson Tide Invitational

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Five athletes competed in four different events for the Florida State track and field team Saturday afternoon at the Crimson Tide Invitational and Virginia Challenge.

In Tuscaloosa, Sara Zabarino posted the best mark of her career in the javelin. Zabarino saved her best throw for last going 54.65m on her last attempt. The mark just outlasted her previous personal best of 54.48m. Zabarino's mark today is the third-best mark in school history and is the 10th-best mark in the NCAA this season.

Amani Heaven had a great day in the shot put, as she shattered her personal record with a throw of 16.03m. Heaven's mark puts her No. 8 on FSU's all-time list in the event and is the fifth-best mark in the ACC this season.

Over in Charlottesville, Ruby Stauber was the lone Nole to compete on Saturday at the Virginia Challenge. Stauber finished fourth in the 800m dash with a time of 2:04.58.

The Noles will be back in action again next Friday and Saturday. The majority of the athletes will head to Jacksonville, Fla., for the UNF Invitational. Maudie Skyring, Lauren Ryan, Adriaan Wildschutt and Ahmed Muhumed will be running in Stanford, Calif., at the Payton Jordan Invitational on Apr. 29.

Noles Continue Season at Virginia and Alabama

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State track and field program will be splitting off into two groups this upcoming weekend at the Virginia Challenge and the Crimson Tide Invitational. The distance runners will head to Charlottesville, Va., while the throwers will hit the road to Tuscaloosa, Ala. Action in Charlottesville begins at 9 a.m. with the men's 10,000m run, while the Crimson Tide Invitational will begin at 2 p.m. with Megan Cook in the women's hammer throw. Three key distance runners will be making their outdoor debut on Friday. On the men's side, Adriaan Wildschutt and Ahmed Muhumed will look to pace the Noles in their first races of the outdoor season. Wildschutt will be running the 5000m run on Friday. Wildschutt holds the school record in the event with a time of 13:28.97 which he set last year at the North Florida Invite. Wildschutt ran 13:09.30 during this past indoor season which is the second-fastest time in NCAA history. Muhumed will also be looking to make his way up the FSU record books in the 1500m run. He is currently No. 7 on FSU's all-time list in the event with a time of 3:42.46. On the women's side, Maudie Skyring is making her first appearance of the outdoor season. Skyring will be competing in the 1500m run where she holds the No. 3 spot on FSU's all-time list. Skyring was a Second Team All-American in the event last season. In Tuscaloosa, Milton Ingraham, Kelechi Nwanaga, Sara Zabarino, Amani Heaven and Cook will be competing in the throw events. Cook will be the first athlete to compete at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Heaven will get the day started in the discus at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Ingraham will compete in the men's discus at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday while Nwanaga and Zabarino will compete in the javelin at 2:30 p.m.

Nwanaga, Odiong Capture FSU All-Time Performances

Tallahassee, Fla. –  The Florida State track and field teams saw 12 personal best performances of Friday at FSU Relays at the Mike Long Track. Kelechi Nwanga and Edidiong Odiong contributed their career bests that were among the all-time top 10 performances in FSU history. Nwanaga led the Noles to a one-two finish in the women’s javelin in dominating fashion, measuring at 55.06m, edging her previous best of 54.93.  She still holds the second-best performance in FSU history but inched closer to the school record (55.59m) that was set back in 2018 by Lauri Paredes. Odiong crossed the line first in the women’s 100m with a career best time of 11.28, which now ties for seventh in FSU history. Her previous best was 11.37, set last year and just shy of the FSU all-time top 10. We had a really good day today, Head Coach Bob Braman said. We came into this meet expecting to get some regional qualifying marks, and we did that today with great performances by Kelechi Nwanaga and Sara Zabarino in the javelin and Edidiong and Ruby on the track. Amani Heaven started the day off with a win in the discus throw, behind a 50.48m mark on her first attempt, well ahead of the second-place finisher (47.24m). The Seminoles added a one-three showing in the men’s event, led by Milton Ingraham, who registered 56.96m on his fifth throw for the win.  Jacob Hoeffner set a personal best and finished third at 51.66m, which was his sixth and final attempt. Freshman Joab Francois took the lead in the back half of the men’s 800m and brought home the victory with a time of 1:52.42. Sara Zabarino followed in second place in the women’s javelin at 52.97m. Sean Watkins Jr. (47.03) and Sukeil Foucha (47.67) placed second and third respectively in the men’s 400m. Ka’Tia Seymour followed in second place (11.47) and Ashley Seymour (11.57) followed in fourth in the women’s 100m. Amir Willis (10.21) and Alex Collier (10.38) followed with a two-four showing in the men’s event, as both performances were personal bests. The Seminoles added wins in both the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles. Ava Klein contributed her career best in the women’s race at 59.77 and James Rivera clocked his best at 50.92 in the men’s. Ruby Stauber and Yasmine Abbes claimed first and second place in the women’s 1500m.  The Noles paced each other out in front before Stauber pulled away at the 1100m mark. Stauber went on to win at 4:21.55 ahead of Abbes (4:30.36). In the men’s race, Sam Field pulled ahead in the final 400m to win with a time of 3:46.52 ahead of Humberto Freire in third (3:48.63) The meet closed out with the 4x400 relays, as both teams took home victories. The team of Klein, Savy'on Toombs, Seymour and Stauber ran a time of 3:46.60 before the men turned in the top two times of the event. Collier, Watkins, Rivera and DaeQwan Butler cruised to victory at 3:07.67 ahead of Damarre Martin, Don’dre Swint, Willis and Jhevaughn Matherson at 3:15.81. The Seminoles will head to Gainesville, Fla., for the Pepsi Relays that will run from March 31-April 2.

Nwanaga Takes Javelin Title at Tiger Track Classic

AUBURN, Ala. - The Florida State track and field team only had five participants on day one of the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala., but all five Noles placed inside the top three in their respective events. The Noles were led by Kelechi Nwanaga who took home the individual title in the javelin. Nwanaga won the event with a throw of 52.84m, just edging teammate Sara Zabarino who finished second with a throw of 52.34m. Megan Cook had a solid showing in the hammer throw as she took third with a personal best throw of 56.34m. Cook's throw is the fifth-farthest throw in FSU history. In the men's long jump, Jeremiah Davis took second with a leap of 7.64m. Teammate Jacore Irving was right behind him with a jump of 7.09m. At the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, Adriaan Wildschutt finished the 3000m run with a time of 8:09.24 while Lauren Ryan clocked in at 9:13.93. The Noles will be back in action tomorrow at the Tiger Track Classic and the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Fla. Action will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Auburn and 2 p.m. in Miami. Noles Begin Indoor Season at Clemson

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State track and field team will head to Clemson, S.C. on Friday for the Clemson Opener. Friday's meet will be the earliest start of the season since the 2018-19 season when they began the year on Dec. 1 at the Colyear-Danville BU Opener in Boston, Mass. Field events will begin at 10 a.m. with running events slated to start at 11:40 a.m. Friday's 17-team field will be highlighted by FSU and their in-state rival Florida as the top two teams in the field. The Noles will also be joined by ACC counterparts Clemson and Georgia Tech as well as South Carolina. Previewing the Noles FSU enters the 2021-22 season with a load of experience, as they return a combined 18 (11 men, 7 women) All-ACC indoor athletes from last season. which is second in the conference. The women will look to defend their ACC title, as the men hope to take home their 15th ACC indoor title. Head coach Bob Braman enters his 18th season at the helm with 14 combined ACC Indoor Championships. That mark puts him second all time in ACC head coaches and first among active ACC coaches. The men return a total of 12 athletes who earned All-America honors during the indoor or outdoor season. Isaac Grimes led the men at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships with a second-place finish in the long jump after an FSU record jump of 8.35m. Trey Cunningham has solidified himself as one of the top hurdlers in the nation and holds the FSU record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.51. Cunningham finished third at last years NCAA Championship. In his first year at FSU, Adriaan Wildschutt has become one of the top distance runners in school history. Wildschutt broke the school record last year in the 5000m with a time of 13:30.55 to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships. In the sprints, the Noles have great depth with Taylor Banks, DaeQwan Butler, Alex Collier, Damarre Martin, Jovaughn Martin, and Don'drea Swint all returning from All-American seasons. On the women's side, the Noles have good balance with plenty of scoring opportunities in the field and on the track. Yasmine Abbes, Alyson Churchill, Ediong Odiong, and Maudie Skyring return after a record-breaking DMR time at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships. Ka'Tia Seymour returns as an All-American in the sprints for the Noles. The Noles added two key transfers in Deandreah Young and Ruby Stauber. Young comes from South Carolina and was an All-American in the 400m hurdles last season. Stauber makes her fourth stop at a Power Five school and will be a key part in the middle distance races. Stauber was the SEC Outdoor Freshman of the year in 2017 with LSU and became a second team All-American in the 800m at LSU and Oregon. In the field, the Noles should once again be strong in the throws under new assistant coach Doug Reynolds. Caisa-Marie Lindfors, Sara Zabarino and Kelechi Nwanaga all return from All-American seasons. Alonie Sutton will return as the lone jumper on the women's side after an All-American season. Quick Notes Dec. 3 will be the earliest start of the season for the Noles since the 2018-19 season when they began the year at the Colyear-Danville BU Opener in Boston, Mass, on Dec. 1, 2018. The Clemson Opener will be the first of three trips to Clemson for the Noles this season. The Noles will travel back to Clemson on Jan. 14-15 for the Clemson Invite and on Jan. 28-29 for the Bob Pollock Meet.  Head Coach Bob Braman enters his 18th year as the head coach of the Florida State track and field team. Braman has won 14 (10 men’s, 4 women’s) outright ACC Indoor Championships. Braman’s 14 combined championships puts him second all time in the ACC and first among active ACC coaches.  Braman brings in three new assistant coaches in Alex Midgett (Distance), Doug Reynolds (Throws) and Leevan Sands (Jumps).  The men finished 6th in last year’s final USTFCCCA poll while the women finished 16th. The women won the 2020 ACC Indoor Championship for the first time since 2018. The men and women swept the ACC Outdoor Championships for the first time since 2014. The men finished 6th and the women 16th at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships.  The Noles return 18 All-ACC athletes which is the second most in the ACC.  The Noles return 11 qualifying athletes from last year’s NCAA Indoor Championships. Isaac Grimes (Long Jump) won silver at last year’s NCAA Indoor Championships while Trey Cunningham (60m Hurdles) won bronze.  The women return seven indoor All-ACC athletes while the men return 11 All-ACC individuals. The Noles won nine ACC weekly awards during last year’s indoor season. The Noles have a load of experience with the men’s team having 19 seniors and the women’s team having 24 seniors.  Adriaan Wildschutt (3000m), Trey Cunningham (60m hurdles) and Isaac Grimes (Long jump) are the lone returning ACC Indoor Champions. Cunningham was one of 10 athletes on the Bowerman List heading into last year’s NCAA Indoor Championship. Isaac Grimes was named the 2021 Indoor ACC Men’s Field Athlete of the Year.  Cunningham (60m hurdles) is one of four athletes in the history of Florida State to win four consecutive ACC indoor titles in a single event. Rafeeq Curry (2003-06), Kimberly Williams (2008-11) and Lacy Janson (2002-05) are the other three. Cunningham received an extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19 and can become the first FSU athlete to win five consecutive ACC indoor titles in a single event.  There are four athletes and one relay team that hold indoor school records.
