Researchers Develop Autonomous Excavator System for "Un-crewed" Excavation

"This work presents an efficient, robust, and general autonomous system architecture that enables excavators of various sizes to perform material loading tasks in the real world autonomously," said Dr. Liangjun Zhang, corresponding author and the Head of Baidu Research Robotics and Auto-Driving Lab.
A Scientific Approach to Robotics
Excavators are vital for infrastructure construction, mining, and rescue applications. The global market size for excavators was $44.12 billion in 2018 and is expected to grow to $63.14 billion by 2026.
Given this projected market increase, construction companies worldwide are facing hiring shortages for skilled heavy machinery operators, particularly excavators. Additionally, COVID-19 continues to exacerbate the labor shortage crisis. Another contributing factor is the hazardous and toxic work environments that can impact the health and safety of on-site human operators, including cave-ins, ground collapses, or other excavation accidents that cause approximately 200 casualties per year in the U.S. alone.

How Much Does Prayer Weigh?

Praying can be easy. A prayer can be a thought, a word, a heavenward plea from someone in need, a few lines said spontaneously or recited from a book, or even just a groan. Understanding what a prayer does after it leaves your lips is a little more difficult. Christian theologians have long debated how prayer works, and what it means to say it “works.” So have scientists.
Psychologist Kevin L. Ladd, a professor at Indiana University South Bend, recently examined some of the extensive recent research on prayer for the John Templeton Foundation. Looking at more than 40 psychological studies finished in the past few years on the impact of prayer on intimate relationships, Ladd found there is some evidence of positive correlations between prayer and improved relationships. “It may,” he writes, “be useful to encourage people to engage some forms of prayer as coping tools.”

For USDOT, a Scientific Approach, and TOD Funds

For USDOT, a Scientific Approach, and TOD Funds
Robert C. Hampshire, Ph.D.
Resurrecting a position that was abolished more than 40 years ago, the U.S. Department of Transportation is appointing a Chief Science Officer for the entire agency, and has taken additional steps “to act on the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to address the climate emergency and restore scientific integrity.” And the Federal Transit Administration has made available $10 million in TOD (transit-oriented development) planning grant funds.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has designated Robert C. Hampshire, Ph.D., as Acting Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology, and officially as Chief Science Officer. Hampshire will serve as the principal advisor to Buttigieg on science and technology issues, “ensuring that USDOT’s RD&T (Research, Development & Technology) programs are scientifically and technologically well-founded and conducted with integrity,” DOT said. He was previously Associate Professor at the University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and at the U-M Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) Human Factors Group and Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS). Hampshire earned his doctoral degree at Princeton University.

COVID-19 circulated the news and conversations in 2019 but it wasn’t until it hit the U.S. in late March, early April that many recognized the gravity of the virus. Life changed for many around the world but especially in the states as everyone was introduced to stay at home orders, social distancing, masks and washing their hands multiple times a day. COVID-19 brought on a great economic downturn as businesses closed due to social distancing forcing companies to rethink how they will reach consumers. Many small businesses, restaurants and social spots didn’t make through the first few months with Black-owned businesses faring the worse. Some countries endured the pandemic, returning to normal conditions after months of sheltering and protocols, only to go through a resurgence. Worldwide, there are currently 81.9 million cases of COVID-19 with 1.79 million deaths and 46.3 million who have recovered. The recent release of much anticipated vaccines are being distributed with health officials hopeful they will bring an end to the pandemic.

shipping car manufacturing overseas, will that have a big impact? it probably will have some impact on that state which is so closely tied to the industry. so at the moment having talked to both campaigns extensively, they're both saying that they're confident but at the end of the conversation you do have the feeling it's jump ball. we don't know who's going to win or sure come tuesday. >> what really strikes me in talking to the two campaigns is that the obama campaign has this incredibly, you know, poll data, scientific approach, and the romney folks seem to have a lot of excitement and enthusiasm which is what you would expect from a challenger but he seems to have really built that up in at least post-debate. and it was frozen in place during this hurricane and now we have to see whether there's enough time. now it is a turnout issue. >> they both have well defined constituencies. governor romney has even though a lot of conservatives are not entirely comfortable with him,
