Nonpartisan Voting Group Asks Tennessee Legislators To Make Redistricting More Transparent

The congressional map in Tennessee changed substantially a decade ago, the last time maps were redrawn.
Tennessee is one of the few states that doesn’t have to get public feedback during redistricting, but nonpartisan voting groups are asking lawmakers to listen anyway.
Census data is in, and that allows Tennessee lawmakers to start redrawing district lines for congressional and legislative seats. The current map was drawn a decade ago.
ThinkTennessee’s report released on Thursday finds that 32 states hold public meetings to gather community input. Roughly half of states allow public input at the redistricting meetings themselves. Tennessee, however, requires neither.

Tennessee super-chancery court push targets liberal Nashville judges

The bill's sponsor in the senate, Sen. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, was clear Tuesday morning that the push to create a new court was to move those cases out of Davidson County for partisan reasons.
He argued Nashville's liberal leanings have created an unbalanced court when compared with more conservative Tennessee overall.
"I’m admitting there’s partisanship within the judiciary, other people want to turn a blind eye to that," Bell said. "These judges are reflecting a philosophy now, and that's of the people that are electing them."
Both the House and Senate versions were recommended for passage and next head to floor votes. On Monday, the House finance committee approved the proposal.

Republican-led legislatures across the country continue a systematic push to pass laws they claim are aimed at ratcheting up election security. The policy debate over voting rights and election integrity has exploded in state houses, ignited by last year’s contentious elections where more people voted — particularly by absentee and mail-in ballot — than ever before.
“In a backlash to 2020’s historic voter turnout, and under the pretense of responding to baseless and racist allegations of voter fraud and election irregularities, state lawmakers have introduced a startling number of bills to curb the vote,” states a report published Thursday April 1, by the Brennan Center for Justice. “As of March 24, legislators have introduced 361 bills with restrictive provisions in 47 states. That’s 108

As GOP shifts strategy from election lawsuits to laws, voting rights advocates warn of Tennessee

As GOP shifts strategy from election lawsuits to laws, voting rights advocates warn of Tennessee
As Republican-led legislatures continue a systematic push to pass laws they say are aimed at ratcheting up election security, voting rights advocates in Tennessee worry the entire nation could soon look a lot like the Volunteer State, where voter turnout and voter registration figures are among the lowest in the country.
