The unglamorous Juergen Teller chapter of anti-fashion art

Welcome to the weekend. I’m
Carolina A. Miranda, arts and urban design columnist at the Los Angeles Times, and I am baaaaaaack. Thanks to my colleagues for holding down the newsletter fort while I spent two weeks in a pandemic resort of my own making, which consisted of generally not moving while reading novels, watching movies and dipping into the wide selection of liquor options that now come in adorable little cans. I’m

Essential Arts: Dire report on COVID-19 and the creative economy

Greetings, I’m
Charles McNulty, your friendly neighborhood theater critic, pinch-hitting for my colleague (and Times arts desk all-star)
Carolina A. Miranda, who’s taking a well-deserved vacation. Before I run out of baseball metaphors, allow me to fill you in on the arts stories that have gripped our attention in the last week.
A moment of silence
The nation reached a mournful milestone on Monday, surpassing 500,000 known coronavirus-related deaths. President Biden held a moment of silence for the dead, ordered flags to be flown at half-staff and, speaking as a man intimately acquainted with grief, reminded Americans that “to heal we must remember.”

Silas Farley, a former New York City Ballet dancer who surprised many by leaving the company early in his dancing career last year, will succeed Jenifer Ringer on July 1 as the head of the dance program at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, the school announced on Wednesday. He will be dean of the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, and Darleen Callaghan, the former director of the North Carolina Dance Theater School and the Miami City Ballet School, will succeed James Fayette as associate dean.

Silas Farley was 9 when he joined a scholarship program for young male dancers at the North Carolina Dance Theatre School of Dance, created by then-director Darleen Callaghan. Quickly recognizing his talent, Callaghan encouraged Farley to begin choreographing at 11 and teaching other dance students at 13.
She continued to mentor Farley over the years as he studied at the School of American Ballet and joined the New York City Ballet as a teenager in 2012, eventually performing principal roles in the works of George Balanchine and Christopher Wheeldon. Last June, Farley announced his retirement from the New York City Ballet and began forging a new path as a dance leader.
