The developer of a luxury Miami Beach high-rise next to the Surfside condominium building that collapsed last week was offering to pay $400,000 to the condo association of the older, smaller building two years ago, at a time when some homeowners were complaining about the proximity of the new building, the impact of vibrations and drifting debris, documents obtained by The Washington Post show.

Local Municipalities Ramping Up Building Inspections After Surfside Condo Collapse

In a tweet, Levine Cava said she is urging “municipalities to do their own aggressive review.”
Many other South Florida municipalities have announced additional steps to inspect older buildings.
A spokesperson with the City of Miami told NBC 6 that they are sending letters to 125 buildings six stories or higher and 40 years or older asking them to hire a licensed structural engineer to conduct an inspection. This is something the spokesperson said is not mandatory, but highly recommended.
The City of Miami Beach also took similar action by sending out structural engineers to older buildings.
In the City of Sunny Isles Beach, a spokesperson said their Building Department has initiated an inspection process for all commercial and multi-family buildings built before 1982, including review of both the inspection paperwork and external structures.

(CNN) -- Amid a rescue mission now in its fifth day, engineers and government officials are trying to determine how a Surfside, Florida, condominium tower crashed to the ground, seemingly without warning.
There are no clear answers yet, but early signs point to some failure in the lower reaches of the 13-story building, perhaps in its foundation, columns or underground parking garage.
Forensic engineers will need to examine the ground-floor columns in their investigation, said Sinisa Kolar, a Miami-based engineering executive.

The focus in the deadly collapse of a condominium tower in South Florida shifted to the structural integrity of the building as an 11th fatality was reported Monday.
The collapse of the 40-year-old, 12-story Champlain Towers South in Surfside — an Atlantic Ocean coastal town of 5,700 about 15 miles north of Miami — happened around 1:30 am Thursday.
More than 150 people believed to be in the building at the time are missing.
