broken. there that adds more merit the atmosphere as well. we will see these warm records tumbling. not just daytime high records of is also rainfall records. the warm air holds more water. we are seeing this deluge of water. we will see that over the next several days. in the northeast we could see some heavy rainfall sunday night into monday. let's talk about severe storm threat. we are looking at some pretty strong storms as we go throughout saturday. we are starting to see the storms pop from an hour. go the severe thunderstorm watch, that is the yellow box to the west in portions of the plains the, rockies. the thunderstorm warnings. that is where you see the little orange boxes. that means that severe weather is happening right. now we are looking for some really gusty winds. winds gusting up to 60 miles per. our that is going to bring down some trees, some powerlines. that's going to create some power outages and that is creating some really warm. spots we are looking at the heavy rainfall. where you see the brighter colors of reds oranges, and yellows. that is where we see the summer downpours. that could create some flash. putting that is a big risk as you are out and about the saturday. out in about -- a big area from denver colorado
delayed in chicago over the weekend, due to heavy rain there. all of that combined with the hot sun, but keep in mind, a number of people are also still traveling for the holiday weekend. so people are dealing with a growing number of flight delays. in fact, we started the day today with more than 400 delays. think about this, we're seeing more people traveling than ever before, last friday, the tsa processed 2.9 million travel ers. that's the highest number for a single day ahead of a busy holiday. >> blayne alexander, thank you so much. let's go over to nbc news meteorologist michelle grossman. not the picture perfect forecast we were hoping for in a lot of places. >> great to see you. it's steamy, it's stormy, we're going to continue to see that as we go throughout the next several days. we have been tracking this for weeks and weeks, the heat dome in place, and we're starting to see storms pop already. the brighter colors, the reds, the oranges, that's the daytime

winds. including southern north carolina and that's that slight risk. we're just now starting to see those storms pop. a severe thunderstorm watch is now in effect, and here's our first little storm moving to the greeneville area. this one has the potential to maybe drop some hail there. doesn't look like a super cell. probable not looking at tornadoes today. this will be difficult travel weather as everyone is trying to get out of town for the big holiday weekend. of course, everyone wants to know what's the weather going to be like. let's start with the bad news. across the plains, rain and storms are likely. this is tomorrow's weather. saturday is a bit of a wash-out here in portions of oklahoma, portions of the panhandle there. northeast, a few scattered showers and storms tomorrow afternoon. not a great beach start to the weekend there. beautiful sunshine, though, across the southeast. that's more like it there in the carolinas. hot and dry weather in florida. now, it gets a little better day by day, so by sunday back to near 80 across much of the northeast. it starts to feel like summer for the unofficial start. sunshine builds in around new york city.
throughout the evening and overnight hours, but this stsd time that we start to see these storms pop. and as you can see, really, to see the tornado warnings line up like this is really incredible especially for mid november. we typically see a severe season no the springtime, a secondary season in the fall, but the fact that they've issued a high-risk area in this region is extraordinarily rare. the fact that it's a sunday as well, i'm worry thad people aren't aware of the situation. so if you have friends, neighbors, relatives that live across the midwest, the areas that i just showed you where we have tornado watches and warnings, they need to be on alert. >> thank you very much e and that live camera you see there looking at chicago. we've seen just in the time we've about on the ara massive change in what you can view from that camera. certainly we'll keep an eye on that situation. and we've been told that play
76 to 8 o the past couple of days. that makes a big difference. now we have all of this heat and all of this humidity down at the surface that's ready to go straight up into the atmosphere 50 or 60,000 feet high. that means that as soon as the storms fire they are going to be severe quickly. there is going to be hail within 15 minutes of when they fire and probably tornadoes within 25 minutes after that. so this is going to be one of those days where you have to pay attention. there is literally nothing on radar right now. it's not happening but it will. we know it's there. we call it the loaded gun. it's ready to go when the storms pop through. there is a cap in the atmosphere. when that cap is broken and one storm goes through the rest are going to go through as well and this is going to be a severe weather day for sure. that's why we're here covering it trying to keep the people of oklahoma safe. >> people in that region, they know why clear skies might actually be bad news but explain to the viewers who don't live in that section of the country how
and we have seen a lot of rain the last several years and are continuing to see that today and also over the next several days. this flash flood watch is in effect until tonight but we will continue to see this. it is typical of this time of the year in july we get a lot of rain here. we should continue to see that trend throughout mid-september. can you see the scattered shower across the four corners and nevada and the moisture makes it up to the state of montana and we get a slight chance to see severe storms today across portions of north dakota and we will keep an eye on that as storms pop up later on today. otherwise, as we head east a lost moisture out here and we need it and we are still in a detroit and we have heavy downpours across texas through parts of upstate new york and those staying out of new york city area but a go batch starting to push east and most of that still will stay north and florida is getting drenched. houston has had at the love flooding and right now you are
right now. let's get to meet ross janice dean who is following this for us. >> reporter: as you mentioned, tornado watch meaning conditions are favorable for not only tornadoes, but large hail, damaging winds and, of course, we could see the potential for heavy rainfall. as this system moves eastward, doesn't look like we have a lot right now on the radar, but we're just starting to see these storms pop around the albany level. interior sections of the northeast and then our tornado watch in effect for philly, new york, up towards boston until 8 p.m. local time. looks like we have a severe thunderstorm warning north of the albany area and just west of new york. so these lines of thunderstorms could become very dangerous throughout the afternoon and evening hours. you can see we've got a lot of consecutive energy and a lot of warm temperatures as this cold front marchs eastward. 87 in new york, behind the front, that's where the cooler air is where it's 72 in buffalo. so you have got the cooler and the more warm, unstable air mass interacting with each other, and
