Will the EPA's Airline Pollution Standards Make a Difference? Pollution Solutions Online

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has just introduced its Rule on Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Aircraft, which is the first piece of national legislation to impose regulations on the aviation industry. But although the laws are long overdue, they unfortunately don’t appear set to make much of a difference to the existing status quo.
That’s because the regulations have been lifted almost wholesale from the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) guidelines. As such, most aircraft the world over already comply with those rules, since doing so is a prerequisite of air travel. Worst still, the EPA’s new legislation only applies to new models – even though no new designs are in the pipeline and aren’t expected to be for 10 years.

How Does the Moon Affect Methane Emissions?

The gravitational pull exerted by the moon could affect methane emissions from our oceans, according to a new study on the Arctic Ocean. Published in the scientific journal Nature in October, the paper looks at how the ebb and flow of the tides affects methane deposits near the seafloor and speculates how these could impact upon the global methane budget should the gas reach the surface of the water.
As a very potent greenhouse gas, methane is believed to be one of the chief contributors towards global warming and climate change. Therefore, any research which can shed light on how it is being emitted from the Earth and what we can do to curb its impact is very welcome – but the paper’s authors say that further investigations are needed in order to fully determine how the moon affects methane emissions.

Air Pollution Recognised as Cause of Death - What Are the Implications?

Last month saw a UK court deliver the landmark ruling that air pollution was responsible for the death of an individual. In 2013, nine-year-old Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah had her life tragically cut short after prolonged exposure to illegally high levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), among other pollutants.
In December 2020, Southwark Coroner’s Court concluded that the poor quality of air to which Ella was exposed on a daily basis had “made a material contribution” towards her premature death, the first time such a ruling has ever been delivered in the UK and possibly anywhere in the world. But while the decision offers scant solace to Ella’s mother – who had fought her case doggedly for years – it may serve as an important precedent for others suffering from exposure to air pollution going forwards.

2020 has been a miserable year for people all across the globe, but the environmental implications of coronavirus have, on occasion, provided a small silver lining. With many industries all but shutting down and far fewer vehicles on our roads all over the world, emissions of certain contaminants fell significantly.
For the first time, NASA has attempted to quantify just how big a difference COVID-19 made to air pollution last year. By using sophisticated computer modelling software and mapping those projections against real-life monitoring data, the space agency was able to arrive at an exact figure for the drop-off in emissions of nitrogen dioxide (NO2).
