มีคำกล่าวว่า "ทองคำ" กับ "คนอินเดีย" เป็นเรื่องที่แยกกันไม่ออก ทั้งในฐานะของเครื่องประดับและในฐานะสินทรัพย์เพื่อการลงทุน แต่สภาพสังคมอินเดียที่กำลังเปลี่ยนไป อาจส่งผลให้ความต้องการทองคำของอินเดียลดลงในระยะยาว

ข้อมูลนี้สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงผลกระทบเชิงบวกในการตัดสินใจของศาลฎีกาอินเดียเมื่อดือนมี.ค.ปี 2563 ที่ยกเลิกคำสั่งของธนาคารกลางอินเดียที่สั่งห้ามสถาบันการเงินให้บริการแก่บริษัทที่ดำเนินธุรกิจเกี่ยวกับสินทรัพย์ดิจิทัล และตั้งแต่ศาลฎีกายกเลิกคำสั่งห้ามของธนาคารกลางอินเดีย ฝ่ายนิติบัญญัติของอินเดียก็ขู่ว่าจะออกกฎหมายใหม่ห้ามให้มีการลงทุนในสินทรัพย์คริปโตเป็นระยะๆตลอดช่วง 15 เดือนที่ผ่านมา
“ริชิ ซู้ด”นักธุรกิจหญิงวัย 32ปี เป็นหนึ่งในนักลงทุนหนุ่มสาวที่หันไปลงทุนในคริปโตเคอร์เรนซีแทนทองคำ โดยเธอเริ่มลงทุนในสกุลเงินคริปโตในวงเงินแค่ 1 ล้านรูปี (13,400 ดอลลาร์)ตั้งแต่เดือนธ.ค.ซึ่งเงินก้อนนี้บางส่วนขอยืมมาจากพ่อของเธอ และเธอลงทุนทั้งในบิทคอยน์ ดอจคอยน์ และอีเธอร์ โดยได้ขายเอาเงินสดออกมาส่วนหนึ่งเมื่อบิทคอยน์ทะลุ 50,000 ดอลลาร์ในเดือนก.พ. ก่อนที่จะกลับเข้ามาลงทุนใหม่เมื่อมีการปรับฐานครั้งล่าสุด และเธอนำเงินสดที่ได้มาเป็นทุนขยายธุรกิจบริษัทสตาร์ทอัพด้านการศึกษาที่ชื่อ“สตัดดี้ เมท อินเดีย”ในต่างประเทศ

ซู้ด เป็นหนึ่งในนักลงทุนอินเดียวัยหนุ่มสาวจำนวนกว่า 15 ล้านคนที่ทำหน้าที่แค่เพียงซื้อมาขายไปเหรียญดิจิทัลเหล่านี้ และจำนวนนักลงทุนในอินเดียกำลังไล่ตามเทรดเดอร์สินทรัพย์ประเภทนี้ในสหรัฐที่มีอยู่ประมาณ 23 ล้านคนและในสหราชอาณาจักรที่มีแค่ 2.3 ล้านคน
ทั้งนี้ บิทคอยน์เป็นสกุลเงินดิจิทัลแรกของโลก จึงถือว่าเก่าแก่ที่สุด ซึ่งตลอดหลายปีที่ผ่านมาบิทคอยน์เข้ามามีบทบาทในการเปลี่ยนแปลงลักษณะการดำเนินธุรกรรมต่างๆ ระหว่างบุคคล สามารถตรวจสอบได้ จึงทำให้นักลงทุนรุ่นใหม่หันมาสนใจลงทุนในบิทคอยน์มากขึ้น
ขณะที่ข้อมูลจากสภาทองคำโลกล่าสุด ระบุว่า ชาวอินเดียที่เป็นผู้ใหญ่อายุไม่เกิน 35 ปี เริ่มมีความต้องการลงทุนในทองคำน้อยลง
“พวกเขาพบว่าการลงทุนในคริปโตง่ายกว่าทองคำเพราะขั้นตอนการลงทุนง่ายมาก ถ้าคุณเล่นเน็ตเป็น ก็เข้าไปลงทุนด้วยการซื้อสกุลเงินคริปโตที่ต้องการลงทุนได้ทันที ไม่ต้องตรวจสอบเงินคริปโตนั้นๆ ไม่เหมือนทองคำ”สันทีป โกเอนก้า ผู้ร่วมก่อตั้งเซ็บเพย์ และใช้เวลาหลายปีในการเป็นตัวแทนอุตสาหกรรมคริปโตในการเจรจากับรัฐบาลเพื่อออกกฏระเบียบควบคุมการลงทุนสกุลเงินคริปโต ให้ความเห็น
แนวโน้มการลงทุนในอินเดียที่เปลี่ยนไป เป็นหนึ่งในปัจจัยที่ทำให้ยอดนำเข้าทองคำของอินเดียในเดือนพ.ค. ที่ผ่านมาร่วงลง นอกเหนือจากการระบาดของโควิด-19 ระลอกใหม่ที่ทำให้ต้องปิดร้านค้า ประกอบกับข้อจำกัดด้านการเดินทาง ที่ทำให้อุปสงค์ทองคำลดลงในช่วงเทศกาลสำคัญและงานแต่งงานของชาวอินเดีย
ยอดนำเข้าทองคำของอินเดียร่วงลงอยู่ที่ 11.3 ตันในเดือนพ.ค. เทียบกับระดับ 70.3 ตันในเดือนเม.ย. แต่ยอดนี้ก็ยังคงสูงกว่ายอดนำเข้าในเดือนพ.ค.ปี 2563 ซึ่งอยู่ที่ 1.3 ตัน โดยในเดือนพ.ค.ปีที่แล้วเป็นช่วงที่รัฐบาลอินเดียประกาศล็อกดาวน์ทั่วประเทศ
การฟื้นตัวของเศรษฐกิจและราคาที่ปรับตัวลงเป็นปัจจัยที่ช่วยหนุนยอดการสั่งซื้อทองของอินเดียในช่วงต้นปีที่ผ่านมา หลังจากที่ร่วงลงอย่างหนักในช่วงปี 2563
แต่การระบาดของโควิด-19 ระลอกใหม่ส่งผลให้รัฐบาลท้องถิ่นหลายแห่งออกข้อกำหนดสำหรับธุรกิจและจำกัดการเดินทางที่ไม่จำเป็น ซึ่งทำให้อุปสงค์ทองคำชะลอตัวลงด้วย
นอกจากนี้ อุปสงค์ทองคำยังปรับตัวลงในวันมงคลตามปฏิทินฮินดูในเดือนพ.ค. เนื่องจากโควิด-19 แพร่ระบาดอย่างหนักจนโครงสร้างพื้นฐานด้านสุขภาพของอินเดียรับไม่ไหว แถมการระบาดใหญ่ที่ยืดเยื้อทำให้รายได้และเงินออมของประชาชนลดลงด้วย
