Coronavirus digest: Canada approves BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine for young teens | News | DW

Teenagers in US now able to get COVID-19 vaccines
The regulatory approval comes as the Canadian province of Alberta reported its first death linked to the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine after a patient died from a rare blot condition, VITT. The patient was a woman in her 50s.
However, authorities have reiterated that the vaccine's benefits far outweigh the concerns over its safety.
It was the first death and the second case of VITT out of the roughly 250,000 doses of the vaccine administered in the province. Last month, Quebec recorded Canada's first death linked to the shot.

EU considers lifting entry restrictions for vaccinated travelers
More people from outside the EU may soon be able to visit the bloc if they meet certain COVID-19 requirements. Member states must still debate the proposal, and the decision is ultimately a national one.
Most airports have been transformed, and largely emptied, by the pandemic
The European Commission put forward a proposal on Monday to expand the list of countries whose citizens may visit the European Union for nonessential reasons as long as they have a good COVID-19 situation or if the individuals are vaccinated.
The EU currently recommends allowing touristic and nonessential travel to its 27 member states to citizens of seven other countries. The Commission is hoping to ease restrictions for more countries.

EMA issues warning over Johnson & Johnson vaccine, stops short of ruling against use | News | DW

EMA issues warning over Johnson & Johnson vaccine, stops short of ruling against use
The EU's medicines regulator said that the benefits of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine outweighed the risks, despite finding possible links to "very rare" cases of blood clots.
The EMA has backed the J&J vaccine, though it does recognize "very rare" cases of blood clotting linked to the shot
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said Tuesday the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine has possible links to "very rare" cases of blood clots — but stopped short of ruling against using the one-shot dose.
The EMA said its safety committee had decided that a warning over unusual blood clots would suffice on the labels of J&J's vaccine, just as the health body did for AstraZeneca's doses.

COVID vaccines tested on real-world variants in Israel | Science| In-depth reporting on science and technology | DW

Brazil COVID-19 deaths surge as variant rages
So, researchers in Israel are trying to address that. Their study has become the first to test a vaccine's effecacy against different variants in real-world settings.
Professor Adi Stern of the Shmunis School of Biomedical and Cancer Research of Tel Aviv University was part of the team of researchers who conducted the study.
In an email to DW, Stern said she and her colleagues had found "real world evidence for reduced effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine against particular variants in specific time windows post vaccination."
From "slightly concerning" to "reassurance"
The researchers "matched" vaccinated and unvaccinated people, according to age, biological sex, ethnic group and location. That was to ensure the most valid comparison possible.

COVID: EU pulls out all stops to boost vaccine rollout
After facing hiccups in its COVID vaccination rollout, the European Union has been going all out to ramp up vaccine production to meet its inoculation target. But creating new capacity isn't an easy task.
The first deliveries of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine manufactured in Marburg are planned for the second half of April
The European Union has drawn flak over the past few months for the sluggish pace of COVID vaccine rollout across the 27-nation bloc. Brussels has been responsible for negotiating vaccine procurement contracts with suppliers and distributing shots to member states.
