Black History Month: Artist and activist John Outterbridge leaves lasting legacy


Illustrator Monica Ahanonu says she s always been inspired by the poetry of Audre Lorde, so the local artist was honored to be chosen to helm the Google Doodle dedicated to Lorde.
He would become a pillar of the assemblage arts movement, using found objects, passed off materials others viewed as junk, to make masterpieces.
He describes the time period of the 60s as being a time when he learned that art was not just for his self expression, but that he could use it as a tool to begin to hold America accountable for what America said it wanted to be, Tami said. ....

.-The Tilton Gallery shared the news of beloved Los Angeles based artist, griot, humanitarian and community activist John Outterbridge’s passing, announced by his daughter Tami Outterbridge via Facebook. John Outterbridge’s groundbreaking work from the 1960s through the mid-2010s has influenced countless artists and his wisdom and mentorship has guided many of us in the art world. Born in 1933 in Greenville, North Carolina, Outterbridge moved to Los Angeles in 1963 by way of Chicago. Known as one of the early Los Angeles assemblage artists to address the social and political moment, his work is poetic while always created with intent, voicing a pointed commentary on the state of this world and the history of African Americans. The artist John Outterbridge has died in Los Angeles. He was 87. His passing was announced by his daughter, Tami Outterbridge, and shared by Tilton Gallery, which represented Outterbridge since 2006. No cause of death was given.
Since the 1960s, Outterbridge was a pioneering figure in LA, serving for decades as the director of the Watts Towers Arts Center and working as a community activist alongside artists such as Noah Purifoy.
In the 1990s, he left Watts Towers to focus on his own practice, which often took the form of assemblages and sculptures that fused the aesthetics of folk art with social commentary on Black American life. He created doll-like figures from discarded objects and found materials, fabrics and scrap metals, wood and old clothes. ....
