Welcome to new perspectives and sources on the elaine massacre of 1919. The panel is devoted to advancing our understanding of the horrific series of events that began just over 100 years ago in which africanamericans were hunted down by a paranoid and enraged crowd of whites inside delta arkansas. I want to recognize first the work guy lancaster did in helping to organize this panel. Unfortunately he had to change his plans to join us and participate. All three of our scholars here on this panel are contributors to a book edited by guy lancaster and we are shamelessly plugging that right here. County Sheriffs Office announce the charges against this man. Well show you the picture of the suspect. The 36yearold faces multiple charges including homicide, arson and torture. Now, according to the Sheriffs Office he allegedly tortured and killed 59 Castro Valley resident andrea st. John before setting her house on fire back in december. Heres the scene when it took place back in Castro Valley. When firefighters found the victim deceased inside of the home, the Sheriffs Office explained he has no connection to the victim and that he was committing a burglary at the victims home that december night when she confronted him and was subsequently killed. Inside a mcdonalds on e street northwest. Theyre huddled together and talking. Then a man this white tank top and jeans, walks out of the shot. You can see him walking out of the restaurant. He follows marquez outside. And hits him in the back of the head. Marquez falls to the ground. As he lies on the ground, someone digs through his pocket. According to the police report, they stole 400 in cash and three credit cards. Marquez was taken to the hospital that night. So Chris Marquez was released from the hospital the night this happened. But when he went back today, he was having different issues, like i said, with memory. So theyve decided to keep him here overnight. He said he believes this is racially charged.
