MADRID, May 5 (Reuters) - Spanish telecom firm MasMovil sold a majority stake in its fibre optic network covering 1.1 million rural homes across Spain to independent operator Onivia, a spokeswoman for Onivia said on Wednesday.
Onivia’s owners - the funds Macquarie, Aberdeen and Daiwa - have bought a 51% stake in MasMovil’s fibre-to-the-home network (FTTH), which includes over a thousand municipalities with fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, for 390 million euros ($467.77 million), a source close to the deal said.
“MasMovil will retain a 49% stake in the network, and Orange will also be a client, leasing access to at least 750,000 homes,” the source told Reuters on Wednesday. ....

Losing 5G work from Telecom Italia, one of Huawei’s biggest clients in Europe, would be a blow to the Chinese technology giant, which has already lost some business to rivals Nokia and Ericsson.
The United States has been pressuring countries to ban Huawei equipment, citing security risks. Huawei has vehemently denied posing a security risk. Only Britain and Sweden have so far banned the company’s equipment in Europe. ....

Malaysia's Axiata, DiGi.Com shares suspend trading ahead of 'material announcement'

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia’s Axiata Group Bhd and DiGi.Com Bhd suspended trading of their shares on Thursday, pending a “material announcement”, both telecommunication companies said in exchange filings.
Last month, local newspaper The Star reported citing sources that talks have resumed between Telenor ASA, the largest shareholder in DiGi.Com, and Axiata for a merger between their mobile telecoms unit.
Both parties had explored in May 2019 a potential non-cash combination of their telecom and infrastructure assets in Asia in a new entity, but called off the talks in September.

Analysis: Cabling Italy - what price the single network as Rome dithers?

6 Min Read
MILAN (Reuters) - When mayor Filippo Tripoli got a phone call from Telecom Italia last December to cable his town in Sicily he was taken by surprise. Bagheria, population 55,000, had already been cabled by rival Open Fiber and another network seemed extravagant.

“It knocked me sideways,” Tripoli said. “What’s the point of cabling a place that has already been cabled once.”
Open Fiber finished work in Bagheria earlier this year and is now busy resurfacing the streets. Telecom Italia (TIM) has just started, but could be finished by the end of the year. Cost? Some 4.5 million euros ($5.4 million) for Open Fiber and around 3 million euros for TIM. ....
