EMBL prepares women postdocs for leadership

EMBL prepares women postdocs for leadership
Members of EMBL’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee explain how EMBL is choosing to challenge through its LEAP mentoring programme
By Roshni Mooneeram: LEAP Programme Manager, EMBL Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer & Eileen Furlong: EMBL Equality, Diversty and Inclusion Officer, Group Leader, Head of Genome Biology Unit, Member of EMBL Directorate
“I felt quorum sensing, like bacteria do, and I felt I am not alone in this journey as a woman in academia.”
-LEAP programme participant
The theme of International Women’s Day this year is #ChooseToChallenge. In that spirit, EMBL’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee has captured the experiences of the 23 pioneering postdocs who were selected for the first Leadership and Excellence for Aspiring Postdocs (LEAP) programme at EMBL. LEAP is part of EMBL’s larger EDI strategy and commitment to advancing the leadership role of women in science by redressing the ‘leaky pipeline’ to senior roles. LEAP is an innovative mentoring and coaching programme with action learning designed to enable women postdocs to challenge themselves and their environment as they strive for their next career step as a group leader, principal investigator, or assistant professor in their field. LEAP is generously funded by the Friends of EMBL, and kindly supported by EMBL’s alumni who are acting as external mentors, all of whom are group leaders or professors in universities or other institutes.

The Asian Century | Global Finance Magazine

With a major new trade deal, favorable demographics and relative success managing the pandemic, Asia is fast assuming global leadership. Has the “Asian Century” just begun?
March 05, 2021
The moment when global leadership passes from one place to another often becomes clear only in hindsight. Did the US become preeminent in 1917 when it entered World War I? Or during the roaring 1920s, when its exports (including Hollywood’s) led the world and one in five Americans became rich enough to buy a car? In reality, the transition of economic, political and cultural power is incremental.
Pinpointing the shift in power from the US to Asia is no easier. Some claim it has already happened, highlighting the great financial crisis that left Asia relatively unscathed and positioned China as the savior of the global economy, boosting its prosperity and standing. Others point to former US President Donald Trump’s abandonment of the post-World War II rules-based order or his withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact as turning points: A geopolitical vacuum tends to be filled.

Wildlife regulation, 'one health' keys to avert more pandemics

Date Time
Wildlife regulation, ‘one health’ keys to avert more pandemics
Future pandemics can be averted if the United Nations and the world’s governments move to eliminate unnecessary wildlife trade and consumption, and then promote a holistic “one-health” approach focused on tearing down scientific and organizational silos, according to global experts speaking at the Feb. 23 virtual conference, “Emerging Disease, Wildlife Trade and Consumption: The Need for Robust Global Governance.”
The experts tied together seemingly disparate factors and global conditions -wildlife markets, societal inequities and human incursions into what’s left of wild nature – that contribute to pandemics.
Hosted by Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine, the World Wildlife Fund and Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, the webinar was moderated by journalist Thomas L. Friedman of The New York Times, with keynote remarks by conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall.

ITU wins engagement award for online meetings and participation

ITU
Last year saw a massive shift of the economy and our lives to the digital sphere – at least for those who were able to be online.
This abrupt shift was no different for the United Nations and ITU, as the UN specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs) was quick to use its in-house expertise to adapt our tools and processes to this new digital reality.
Yesterday, the Geneva Internet Platform and DiploFoundation recognized ITU’s efforts at the 6th Geneva Engage Awards, where our organization won the ‘Online meetings and participation’ category.
More inclusive meetings
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, ITU built on its position as an ICT leader within the UN family to enable our events and meetings to transition online.
