Best Picture Potentials Offer a Time Capsule of the Current Zeitgeist

Best Picture Potentials Offer a Time Capsule of the Current Zeitgeist

Oscars are a time capsule. Though pundits may quibble about nominees or winners, one thing is beyond question: The film choices reflect the year in which they were released.
For example, in 1946, “The Best Years of Our Lives” hit a nerve as people were trying to rebuild their lives after WWII. The 1969 “Midnight Cowboy” captured all the sexual confusion, excitement and fear of that tumultuous decade.

This year’s contenders similarly reflect the moment we’re living in: a time of racial tension, gender battles, political wars, health issues and an overriding sense of doubt and isolation. A montage of 2020 film highlights would sum up the year just as accurately as newsreel clips.

Known for his captivating gaze, Daniel Kaluuya says his 'Judas and the Black Messiah' role was all about the mind

Daniel Kaluuya stars as Chairman Fred Hampton in "Judas and the Black Messiah."Warner Bros. Pictures..
"Yo, why are you smiling like that?" Daniel Kaluuya asks, looking directly into the camera during an early February Zoom call. "Why are you smiling? What's funny?"
The answer is nothing, a genial smile turning nervous as Kaluuya continues the line of questioning. To be on the receiving end of the British actor's gaze is to realize how much he controls and shapes the exchange, with remarkable agility. He picks up on the slightest response and shifts his mannerisms accordingly, a skill he developed during his improvisational theater days and that he employs on the call as a way to demonstrate how quickly an actor can generate conflict at any given moment.

Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning actor Jim Broadbent (“The Duke”) will lead the cast of “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry,” an adaptation of Rachel Joyce’s bestselling novel.
Broadbent will play the eponymous Harold, who embarks upon a 450-mile walk across the U.K. in the belief that his journey will save the life of his old friend Queenie who is dying in a hospice.

BAFTA winner Hettie Macdonald (“Normal People”) will direct.
“Rachel’s beautiful story is made for cinema: a raw and emotional portrait of a man battling long-buried feelings of grief and guilt in a vast landscape,” said Macdonald. “I find Harold’s journey across England and his belief that he can make a difference extraordinarily moving and inspiring. I am enormously excited to be working with Jim Broadbent who I know will use his warmth, range and sensitivity to create an onscreen Harold who will lodge deep in the hearts of everyone who sees it.”
