Official review finds widespread Islamophobia in the Tory Party and failures to investigate internal allegations of racism

A DAMNING report has identified widespread Islamophobia in the Tory Party as well as failures to investigate internal allegations of racism.
The long-awaited review into discrimination in the Conservative Party published today found that two thirds of all such complaints related to Islamophobia.
Report author Professor Swaran Singh said comments made by Prime Minister Boris Johnson comparing women wearing burkas to letterboxes and bank robbers gave the impression of being “insensitive to Muslim communities.”
Complaints were handled by an under-resourced and inadequately trained team that fell short of best practice, the report adds, saying an overhaul of the system was needed.

Net-zero, not-zero and ground-zero

WHAT a mess we are in. Labour loses the Hartlepool by-election with a 16 per cent swing to the Tories. A new north-south divide is opening up.
With the exception of London, Labour no longer holds the hearts and minds of its conventional heartlands. So much for new leadership, new vision. What on Earth is going on?
Ground zero: Boris Johnson gets caught out lying again. Those queuing for the sales in Primark clothing stores just shrug their shoulders. Nothing new there. Johnson is a “Jack the lad” with only an occasional (and entirely accidental) association with the truth. If they had a wish, those outside Primark would probably just want the queue to move faster.

Government summer schools will reach just 1 in 12 of pupils

ONLY one in 12 pupils will be able to access the government’s puffed-up summer school plans, Labour’s analysis of official data has found.
Labour, which looked at summer school funding plans, has demanded that ministers put children at the heart of a national recovery.
In February, the government announced funding for summer schools to support children’s following the lockdown.
But only 8 per cent of students will able to access it, Labour said.
For incoming Year 7 pupils, the funding would provide just one week of summer teaching and activities.
Shadow education secretary Kate Green said: “These half-baked summer school plans are yet more evidence of the Conservatives’ failure to deliver on their promises on children’s recovery.

The thin blue line: maintaining whose order?

THE last word is never uttered on the vexed question of policing in 21st-century Britain.
We have a long history of riots, disturbances, insurrections and demonstrations in which the public discussion is continually diverted from the substantive issues at stake — the repeal of the Corn Laws, the demand for a People’s Charter of democratic rights, the right to strike, the right to a job, against nuclear weapons and imperialist wars, against the imposition of the poll tax, anger at deaths in the hands of the police and so on.
The temper of the crowd and the tactical disposition of the police are always factors in determining what happens on the day while the attempt by authority — always buttressed by an obedient and servile media — to frame the principal issue as one of public order is always present.
