>> the co-anchor of cnbc's "squawk box," andrew ross sorkin. talk about the number that just crossed and what it means for economy. >> we have some good news this morning, mika, the best in a while when it comes to inflation. inflation was a lot less, the cpi data that came in this morning showing a 0.1% tick up. that was significantly less than people expected, sort of suggests -- not just sort of, but suggests inflation will be coming down in a meaningful way. this of course ahead of what we'll hear from jay powell, the chair of the federal reserve, who will be speaking tomorrow and the expectation around what kind of rate hike may be in the offing from him. we are expecting that to be what they call a 50 basis points raise, but maybe more importantly, the expectation of the fed raising rates in '23 is now coming down. the expectation that he's going to have to continue to put his foot on the neck of the economy,

because that's where sick people will be. that's common sense and have always known that. one more for you. breaking news today from the cdc on the monkeypox outbreak with updated numbers. 13,500 cases in 49 states. that's a tick up in the last couple of weeks by quite a bit. but what about how we keep the fear down, the protection and the information up? the cdc is in fix itself mode. >> one of the reasons cdc got it fix itself mode because they were behind on testing again and we heard it from the local doctors and hospitals here in new york where we didn't have the tests we need. we were behind the 8 ball and underestimated the number of cases like at the beginning of the covid pandemic. the way to get around the fear, your point, is to say who is at risk. is it men who have sex with men with multiple partners? that's the primary group. where are the tools we need? i talked to the governor of new york about this is other day.

what you are seeing right now, it's just the early vote, the early mail vote you are looking at here. what's yet to come in is the same day vote. and the really troubling thing for rice is that elsewhere in the district, fry has been doing better, about six points better on the same day vote then he has in the early and the mail vote. so, there's an opportunity for fry -- if what we are seeing elsewhere in the districts holds, in horry county, which is half the district -- to watch this number where he is up right now. we will watch this tick up, where the issue comes in -- the issue is simply this -- if he can get to 50% -- remember, there's a 50% rule in south carolina -- if he can get to 50%, he wins outright. it's all over, tom rice is out of a job. but rice right now is trying to keep fry under 50 and force this thing into a runoff. you see we have a few more votes somewhere else, but rice right now, the name of the game is to survive tonight, to somehow hold fry under 50, get this to a runoff. but even if he does that, you
