i think they will get some general idea, anderson. and their hope will be that it doesn t contradict anything that led them to believe that the plane was off the west coast of australia. the satellite handshakes. we ll hear more over the next few weeks. i was surprised to hear anything at all today. the french are very methodical about how they do things and complete. it is going to be a while before we hear where they think this came from. david sousi, pointing out a small amount of damage to the front the ragged horizontal tear across the back. what does that mean to you? how do investigators determine exactly how much it came off the plane? it means there are two ways it could have come off the airplane. one hitting water, it was extended the time of ditching could have pulled it off, damaged the trailing edge without damaging the leading edge. the other way possibly if the aircraft did enter into a very steep stall, and exceeded its mach limits at which point a ....

The paint. it has to be samples from the paint. from the metal to tie it specifically to the air craft. that s what they re waiting for. that s what they mean when they say 100% conclusive. richard, the piece of debris french authorities are doing this additional analysis to confirm whether or not it is from the plane. is it just the paint they re looking at? they re looking at every aspect of it anderson. the obvious parts they re going to be looking at for example you can see the front, that s the leading edge of the flaperon. very little damage has been done here. they re going to be looking to see exactly why that would necessarily be the case. but the exact opposite of course of that can be seen on the reverse, or the trailing edge of the flaperon. and here you get a very jagged edge. they re going to want to know did that happen when it cam off the aircraft? came off the aircraft in the air or in the water? or perhaps that was caused as the as the flaperon made its ....

Beat on trailing edge of the underside might help indicate that. that tells us possibly and i caution the listener possibly about the impact angle. we find some more pieces that look similar and we can really start feeling comfortable with the impact angle. this is like having a 1,000-piece puzzle putting one piece on the table and say what s the picture? lots more steps to go with you. shawn, stay with me. richard quest, back to you. i keep going back to this is one piece. i look at you and i think when air france went into the ocean off of south america and in that first week they found pieces of debris. where are the other pieces? there was never one maybe perhaps and it took 12 days before they got to that part of the ocean. for understandable and difficult reasons but it took 12 days before they got to that part of ....

Experts in toulouse, france starting to analyze the boeing 777 flaperon that was found last week on reunion island. the seven-foot section of the trailing edge of the wing is almost certainly from mh 370 because it is the only 777 to ever crash into the ocean. so the investigation will focus on more than just identifying the piece. experts will also be using state-of-the-art forensic technology that could show whether the plane crashed in the sea or broke up in flight. in other words, did it fall off? was the piece ripped off? what they won t be able to find is why the jumbo jet veeredff course and disappeared from radar. it s unclear how long their analysis will take. oceanographers are analyzing models showing the trade winds and ocean currents over the past 16 months in the indian ocean with the hope of being able to retrace how far the debris drifted and possibly get a better idea of where the jet went down. experts warn that it s a very difficult thing to pinpoint. for now, search ....

Flight and that the question now is i think moren what l.a. can they learn from this piece of metal. is there some indication that there was an explosion or that they can maybe perhaps find out what speed the plane was flying when it crashed and this thing sheared off the wing. that s the kind of thing i think they ll be looking at more intensively now. so, david, how will investigators try to determine whether there was an explosion or what the speed of the plane may have been? well, there are a couple things about the flaperon. one of them is the trailing edge is feathered. that s indicative of transsonic range, which is where the airplane is approaching the speed of sound but the air over the wing exceeded the speed of sound and creates an extreme flutter. that could be an explanation for what we see here. but i think that the as jim said, too, the next step is what can it tell us about if there was an explosion or not even if ....
