Ministry moves to limit study programmes that refuse women

In China, women have long been barred from studying at certain universities or pursuing certain professions solely because of their gender. Finally, China’s education authorities have said schools may no longer set enrolment quotas based on gender – though some study programmes will remain off-limits, to the consternation of advocates.
“Except for some special institutes such as those for military, national defence and public security, schools shall not stipulate gender ratios for admitting new students,” the Ministry of Education said in late January, weeks before the comments were picked up by domestic media. Although the new regulation is welcomed by many as relatively progressive for a country as patriarchal as China, some people are dismayed that the authorities apparently still feel that some study programmes should continue to be the exclusive domain of men, calling this discriminator ....

In a unique effort to stem the spread of the coronavirus, the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) in the United States will pay US$75 ‘grants’ to its students to discourage them from travelling during spring break this year. The programme, entitled ‘Healthy Davis Together’, is a partnership between the university and the city of Davis, California. The university announced it in a press release on Friday 5 March promising students they’d be eligible for a US$75 grant if they didn’t travel during the 20-24 March break. ....

British Columbia Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry told the presidents of colleges and universities in her province last week that they should prepare to conduct in-person instruction in September. The provincial ministry said it will issue guidelines over the next few months on how to safely resume campus life.
University of British Columbia (UBC) President Santa Ono said in a campus e-mail broadcast that, based on current immunisation timelines, UBC would be ready to increase its level of on-campus activities in September. The provincial government has indicated that if vaccine delivery goes as planned, it should be possible for everyone in the province who is eligible to be immunised by mid-summer. ....

The Diyanet was allocated the funds for five projects, out of 51 projects under the category ‘Vocational and Technical Education’, while some 673 projects under ‘Higher Education’ were allocated a total of TRY5.7 billion. The only schools that received more funding than the Diyanet were Bogazici University, Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa, Marmara University, Istanbul Medeniyet University and Necmettin Erbakan University. Meanwhile, Istanbul Technical University’s budget was lower than the Diyanet’s with a mere TRY45.9 million, as well as Yildiz Technical University’s budget of TRY35.8 million. ....
