Will India host more international students post-COVID?

Will India host more international students post-COVID?
There have been many discussions of late about future directions in international student mobility. While all of them suggest that there will be no return to the ‘old normal’, there are differing opinions on possible academic mobility trends going forward.
For example, some scholars believe that mobility will become more localised, with intensified exchanges taking place within regions. Others project that there will be a shift in terms of the receiving countries’ profile, that is, from high-income countries to middle- or even low-income countries. If this is the case, it raises an important question about whether these countries are prepared to host a growing number of international students. ....

Unions fear impact of suppression of campus activity

Unions fear impact of suppression of campus activity
Candidates standing for leadership positions in Hong Kong’s university student unions are facing increased pressure over campus activities in the wake of the new Beijing-imposed National Security Law. Warnings from university management directed at unions and fears of being individually targeted have meant few students are willing to stand for union positions.
Union members said university management has been quick to object by letter to campus events organised by student unions, particularly after Hong Kong’s Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung called on universities in November last year to tighten up on student activities. ....

The pandemic is taking higher education back to school

The pandemic is taking higher education back to school
Promises for a coronavirus vaccine and eventual herd immunity mean that the autumn 2021 semester at colleges and universities might start to feel normal again. But after almost a year of online and hybrid teaching, can we ever really get back to how things were before COVID-19? Do we even want to?
If there’s anything truly endemic to higher education, it is probably its grounding in tradition. Few other industries regularly dress up their staff in robes (for graduation), continue to support massive libraries of hard copy books or celebrate bizarre and antiquated rituals surrounding odd events like baccalaureate or investitures. ....

Academic responsibility: The changing mission of HE

Academic responsibility: The changing mission of HE
A profound change is taking place in our understanding of the mission of higher education. Increasingly, we have realised that academic freedom must be accompanied by the exercise of academic responsibility, in the sense of making a contribution to civil society. Actively responding to societal challenges is one way of doing so – as many universities have demonstrated in the case of COVID-19.
It is by now a commonplace remark that the COVID-19 pandemic has changed everything, everywhere. We should all prepare for a ‘new normal’.
This is true, in particular, for residential universities, whose beautiful and comfortable campuses, in which they have invested so much care and money, were suddenly swept clean of students and professors in early 2020. ....
