South Africa’s National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) saw a 25% jump in funding applications for 2021. The demand for funding from NSFAS has grown by 25% in 2021, Nzimande said on Monday 18 January. Ministry orders vice-chancellors to start with classes
Ben Goong, spokesperson for the ministry, confirmed the decision to

Staff and students are anxious as five professors, including a former vice-chancellor, have reportedly died due to COVID-19, according to local media.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that the absence of anti-COVID protocols on campuses may endanger the lives of students and staff.
Some vice-chancellors of public universities are considering compliance with the instructions of Adamu Adamu, the federal minister of education, that campuses should reopen, but this could place them on a collision course with ASUU. ....

Biden calls time on Trump's four-year moratorium on truth

Biden calls time on Trump’s four-year moratorium on truth

In terms of higher education, he will be remembered not only as a president hostile to its fundamental purpose – the pursuit of knowledge – but also as one who failed to leverage the strengths of US universities to make for a better world.
The extent to which the Trump administration leaves a higher education legacy will perhaps best be determined by the shelf life of its meagre policy accomplishments. But the damage done from his four-year moratorium on truth and his unending embrace of nationalism presents a deeper challenge. ....

Campuses face new lockdowns to halt spread of COVID-19
Universities in China are shutting early in advance of the Lunar New Year holiday as outbreaks of COVID-19 in several regions, including the capital Beijing, cause alarm.
