"Cocaine & Rhinestones" Returns, to Dazzle Again

“Nearly everybody is confused by their first interaction with a pinball machine,” Tyler Mahan Coe says, with his familiar declarative zeal, at the beginning of the long-awaited second season of his country-music-history podcast, “Cocaine & Rhinestones.” We hear the game’s bells, chimes, and thunks as Coe delves into pinball discourse (in old movies, “pinball is a signifier of people with ambiguous morals who
will break the law if the reward is having a good time”), historical details (in 1942, Fiorello LaGuardia “armed the N.Y.P.D. with sledgehammers and a mandate to smash pinball machines on sight”), and country music (Lonnie Irving’s mournful “Pinball Machine”). We don’t know why he’s talking about pinball, and we don’t care: it’s glorious listening. After ten minutes of this, and after announcing that the game is “responsible for some of the greatest country music ever made,” Coe plays the “Cocaine & Rhinestones” intro. There’s a strange little euphoria in this moment: we understand that this season will be a dazzling adventure, and that the mysteries of its narrative path will only enhance it.

They were noteworthy for some of the groundbreaking nominees and winners, but kinda stunk for production decisions.
We do have to cut them some slack. It was an impossible task, during a pandemic, in a much smaller venue, Union Station (gorgeous and historic but not large enough to present “spectacle”), with some guests seated across town at the (formerly) Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, the traditional site of the awards recently and the largest stage in the U.S.
Song and dance numbers, vital to the entertainment value of the show? Missing. I heard they did some songs on the red carpet, but I never tune in to the fashion and fabulousness flaunting so I missed that. Whatever there was.

Music’s best podcast stars a self-taught know-it-all talking about George Jones. For 30 hours [Los Angeles Times]
Around the time most honky-tonk bartenders are headed home for the night, Tyler Mahan Coe shuffles toward his book-strewn office in the East Nashville apartment he shares with his girlfriend and records “Cocaine & Rhinestones,” his fiercely told, relentlessly researched podcast on the history of country music.
“About 1:30 a.m. is when all the neighbors get quiet and cars stop driving by outside, and about 5:30 or 6 is when the birds outside start making noise,” Coe said during a recent call.
Coe, the son of Outlaw Country singer-songwriter David Allan Coe and who dropped out of high school at 15 to play guitar in his dad’s band, had just finished taping the fifth episode in his season-long exploration of country singer George Jones — an artist he said “just happened to have this chest cavity that glowed with so much air.” The first episode, “Starday Records: The Anti-Nashville Sound,” came out Tuesday — all two hours and 13 minutes of it — and 17 more are on the way.
