"Rapid and unplanned urbanization in the least developed districts of B" by Sm Abdullah Al Mamun, Md Mozahidul Islam et al.

Sustainable urban development is a key compoment in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Monitoring urbanization is critical for planners, governments and non-governmental organizations, and scientists to design policies that maximize the use of natural resources and accommodate development while reducing environmental effects. This research aims to analyze how urbanization patterns have changed in the largely unknown least developed regions of Bangladesh. Multispectral satellite imageries over 30 years (1991 to 2021) were used to analyze the urbanization pattern of Jamapur district. Utilizing object-based image classification and on-field validation for seven Land Use and Land Cover classes, it was found that built-up area expanded by 748.92% during the past three decades while depleting bare soil (− 97.65%), deep waterbody (− 79.33%), shallow waterbody (− 8.46%), light vegetation (− 14.28%) and agricultural land (− 26.33%). Because of increased in built-ups, the land surface temperatures (LST) were also increased over the study period (the minimun recorded LST were 12.84 °C, 15.89 °C, 15.8 °C and 17 °C while the maximun LST were 17.93 °C, 23.7 °C, 23.79 °C and 26.73 °C for the year of 1991, 2001, 2013 and 2021 respectively). This study will act as a baseline for future studies It be insightful to urban planners and policymakers in developing countries regarding urban sustainability and minimizing urban risks and hazards in the least developed districts.

"Mapping flood extend and its impact on land use/land cover and settlem" by Shan e.hyder Soomro, Caihong Hu et al.

Floods are the most frequent and most distractive natural disaster around the globe. Pakistan is facing frequent flooding since 1929 and floods in the Indus river basin cost more than 7000 lives and caused mighty changes in land use and land covers (LULC) since 1947. District Layyah hit by flood on August 1, 2010. Landsat ETM+ with 30 m spatial resolution was utilized to investigate the LULC changes in district Layyah for the 2010 flood. It was revealed water area increased 8.05% from July 3 (379.13 km2) to August 20 (656.02 km2) in district Layyah. Vegetation cover increased from 1149.62 km2 on July 3 to 1842.23 km2 on August 20 in district Layyah and showed a 20.13% increment. Barren/built-up area showed a decrement of 28.18% from 1911.72 km2 in pre-flood analysis to 941.90 km2 in the post-flood analysis. Total 15 union councils (UC) of district Layyah were affected by flood from which 10 lies in tehsil Layyah and 5 belongs to tehsil Karor Lal Esan. Flood affects 177 settlements in district Layyah from which 156 belong to tehsil Layyah and 21 were from tehsil Karor Lal Esan. These results suggest that the impacts of the flood on LULC need more attention to cope with the challenge of frequent flooding and impacts in Pakistan.
