When Craig Carpenito took over as U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey nearly three years ago, he brought a reputation as a workmanlike lawyer who would use the high-profile position to focus on the courtroom, not the television cameras.
And that s what he did, slipping past the spotlight as he added more attorneys, boosted the office s production and created special units to deal with violence, opioids and cybercrime, among other things. It was a far different approach from predecessors such as former Gov. Chris Christie, whose boisterous style catapulted him into Drumthwacket just a year after he stepped down as the U.S. attorney in 2008.
