Retirement would mean farewell. I am very pleased that, in his retirement, he remains a fixture in the commonwealth. As i think everybody knows, and appreciates, garys contributions to civil war studies are varied beyond his own scholarship which is writing and editing nearly 30 books and hundreds of articles and reviews. He has been a frequent contributor and columnist for popular civil war magazines, preservationists and battlefield guides. He is the Founding Editor of the most Popular Series of civil war the civil war america series. The students who are the prominent scholars in our field. In academia, there is a tradition that i dont know how popular these are but books that students write essays in honor of their mentors. Garys is going to have to be for volumes long to do it justice for all the students he has meant toward and the prominence and the work they are doin ....

The question became what to do next, and at the time that i worked at the fredericksburg military park, the thing about fredericksburg, they were massive battles. Huge. I like to study the smaller engagements. The problem with that, the smaller they are, the harder they are to study. So, dranesville. I was hoping to create a book out of it. This 45minute talk was part of a daylong conference hosted by the university of virginias center for Civil War History. So we will begin this mornings lecture with gary w. Gallagher. As many of you know, we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to professor gallagher. He was the founding director of the nau center, retired just last spring from uva where he held the john l. Nau chair in Civil War History from 1999 to 2018. He is the author or editor of at least 39 books, including the union war, the american war and most recently civil war places which, too, is in the back, beautiful book, his son will took the photographs and this is an absolute treasure if you havent had a chance to see it yet.
