Coronavirus Stimulus Package Specifically Blocks School Choice 23 Dec 2020 The 5,600-page coronavirus stimulus bill passed by Congress Monday evening specifically blocks governors from using emergency education relief funds for school choice programs. Page 1,865 of the 5,600-page bill states under “Restrictions” for the use of the $2.75 billion allotted for the Governors Emergency Education Relief (GEER) fund, created in the earlier coronavirus relief bill in March: Funds provided under this section shall not be used … (B) to provide or support vouchers, tuition tax credit programs, education savings accounts, scholarships, scholarship programs, or tuition-assistance programs for elementary or secondary education. Eric Boehm wrote at Reason Tuesday the new restrictions on GEER funds come “seemingly in response to the fact that several governors used the first round of GEER funding to launch or expand school choice programs.”
Study: Suicide Rates Drop After School Choice Laws Adopted 21 Dec 2020 A study published December 3 has found significant declines in the suicide rate of adolescents in the wake of the enactment of laws that allow school choice. Published at the journal School Effectiveness and School Improvement, the study’s authors, the Cato Institute’s Corey DeAngelis and economist Angela Dills, noted their work is the first to link school choice to mental health outcomes. Using two empirical strategies, the researchers analyzed the effects of the enactment of state voucher and charter school laws on adolescent suicide rates, and also examined the effects of private schooling on later reported adult mental health issues.
