SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From kidney failure to heart damage to strokes, COVID-19 can cause a wide range of complications from head to toe. New research from a team of scientists at the Salk Institute in La Jolla helps explain why.
The study published in Circulation Research confirms the virus attacks the cells lining blood vessels. Since blood vessels feed every organ, these vascular endothelial cells give the virus a foothold to launch assaults across the body.

COVID-19 is a vascular disease not a respiratory one, says study

A study at the University of San Diego claims to have proof that COVID-19 is not a respiratory illness, but a vascular one.
This could explain blood clots in some COVID patients and other issues like "COVID feet", which are not classic symptoms of a respiratory illness.
The study, published in the journal Circulation Research, shows with precision how virus damages the cells of the vascular system.
It was already known that besides the various symptoms of COVID-19 that coincide with respiratory problems, there are other cardiovascular issues that affect other parts of the body.
What’s new is the team conducting the study, which included scientists from the SALK Institute, showed the form in which the virus attacks the vascular or circulatory system.

The various ways in which COVID-19 affects the body has made it difficult to find effective treatments, but now scientists think they've figured out why - it's actually a vascular disease.
That's one which primarily affects blood vessels, in particular endothelial cells, which line the vessels' interior.
"A lot of people think of it as a respiratory disease, but it's really a vascular disease," said Uri Manor, co-author of a new study into how COVID-19 attacks the body. "That could explain why some people have strokes, and why some people have issues in other parts of the body. The commonality between them is that they all have vascular underpinnings."

Coronavirus's "spike" proteins play a key role in the illness. The paper, published in the journal
Circulation Research, concluded that COVID-19 is a vascular disease, demonstrating how the virus damages and attacks the vascular system on a cellular level.
The findings help explain COVID-19's wide variety of seemingly unconnected complications, and could open the door for new research into more effective therapies.
"A lot of people think of it as a respiratory disease, but it's really a vascular disease," said Uri Manor, Assistant Research Professor at the Salk Institute in California.
