SAN ANTONIO — The Texas Senate advanced its version of a so-called "election integrity" bill Tuesday, but the measure is doomed as long as House Democrats remain in Washington, D.C.
The proposal is nearly identical to the House version of the bill which faces the same fate.
Both measures impose weaker restrictions on voting than the bill Republicans pushed in May. Democratic lawmakers walked out of the House chambers to ensure there would not be a vote on that proposal during the final moments of the regular session.

SAN ANTONIO – The name has become synonymous with change, with disparity, and even with hope -- George Floyd.
One year ago, Floyd died after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for over nine minutes in front of a horrified crowd of people.
On Tuesday, people across the U.S. turned inward on their own communities.
“Every single day I think about George Floyd. There has been a lot of positive that has come out of this tragedy, but it really is a day of reflection,” said San Antonio activist Valerie Reiffert.

Opponents of Fix SAPD's petition drive hold up signs at a polling site where volunteers collected signatures last fall. On October 20, a San Antonio activist who goes by the name Justice the Musician arrived at Cody Library to collect signatures from early voters for a petition to repeal the part of the Texas Government Code that gives police officers the right to collectively bargain.
Justice was working on behalf of advocacy group Fix SAPD, which sees the police union’s collective bargaining power as a primary obstacle to law enforcement reform in the city.

‘We are marching on in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King,’ activist says

SAN ANTONIO – Unable this year to gather together due to COVID-19 case surges, the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission staged a virtual version Monday of the city’s MLK march that, in years past, has been one of the nation’s largest.
Even so, Mark’s Outing, a popular burger joint and a favorite gathering spot for marchers over the years, had its first annual MLK block party.
The festive atmosphere was in stark contrast to the turbulent events of the past year, from last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests against racial injustice, false claims of stolen election culminating in the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and the nation’s peaceful transition of power under continued threat.
