SMITHFIELD – Three students will share the top of the class this year with two co-valedictorians, Maximilian Chelminski and Cameron Kasbarian, and a salutatorian, Victoria Richard, as Smithfield High School transitions out of its traditional class ranking system.
SHS Principal Dan Kelley said the year was already challenging enough, and students kept the competition tight for top rankings. He said he was proud of the school’s top three, who persevered among a class of 165 students.
SMITHFIELD – There was a delay and a change of formatting, but nothing can stop the Smithfield Fashion Show from returning this year with an online telethon format. The hope, say organizers, is that the largest fundraiser for the senior class will again bring in funds for senior events.
Rather than the usual December performance, SHS will host the Fashion Show online this Saturday, May 8, at 7 p.m. at bit.ly/SHSFashion21 .
More than 30 years after its debut, the Smithfield Fashion Show is a rite of passage for Smithfield seniors, featuring mostly satirical skits with some fashion thrown into the mix.

Chicago is bracing for protests after officials released a graphic body-camera video showing police officer Eric Stillman shooting and killing a 13-year-old boy as he appeared to be raising his hands.
The nine-minute video from Mr Stillman’s body camera showed the 34-year-old officer running after Adam Toledo in an alley at 2.30am on 29 March in Little Village, a Mexican neighbourhood on the city’s West Side.
SMITHFIELD – Victoria Richard, a senior at Smithfield High School, is one of two Rhode Island students chosen to participate in the United States Senate Youth Program during the 59th annual USSYP Washington Week, March 14-17.
“I was beyond ecstatic to get this opportunity,” Richard said. “This was actually the second year in a row I applied for this program. I got rejected the first time, so it was even more exciting when I received the news. As a student who’s been very involved in government and politics since I was a freshman, having the chance to talk to higher-up government officials, Supreme Court justices, and the president is a dream come true.”

Hometown Smithfield proud of Raimondo’s appointment
Town Council President Suzy Alba, left, said she is proud of Smithfield native Gov. Gina Raimondo for her nomination from president-elect Joe Biden to work in his cabinet as commerce secretary.
SMITHFIELD – For many Smithfield residents and town officials, having one of their own move forward to work in the White House with President-elect Joe Biden proved a source of pride this week.
Last week, Biden nominated Smithfield native and Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo, 49, for secretary of commerce. Her appointment, which requires Senate approval, will leave former Cumberland Mayor and Lieutenant Gov. Dan McKee to serve out the remaining two years of Raimondo’s term.
