Eskom has made a final wage offer of a 1.5% increase to unions representing workers at the power utility.
It concluded the second round of wage negotiations on Friday.
Solidarity, National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), and National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) are demanding a 15% increase.
Eskom’s spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says the proposed increase is unaffordable.
“Eskom reiterated its rejection of labour’s demands of 15% wage increase amongst others, together with benefits that will add to 26% to the current wage bill if accepted as they stand.

The union's spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says Eskom is sharing fake news about worker's salaries to the media.

"As we prepare to meet to discuss workers’ demands we wish to send out a word of caution to journalists to kindly resist the temptation to promote fake news about what workers at Eskom are earning.

"The spokesperson of Eskom Sikonathi Mantshantsha falsely claimed that the average employee at Eskom earns an average salary of R773 000 per year," adds Majola.

Public sector: we need to think outside the pay packet

02 May 2021 - 00:00
Public service & administration minister Senzo Mchunu must be heaving a sigh of relief that, even though yesterday was Workers' Day, he did not have to physically attend any mass rally organised by his party's alliance partner Cosatu.
The man who narrowly lost out to Ace Magashule for the post of ANC secretary-general at the party's 2017 national conference has become unpopular with the very unions who partially funded the #CR17 ticket he ran on...

Even before the current round of talks, the parties were locked in a dispute over the government's reluctance to honour the last leg of a three-year wage deal. That dispute, which has been to the Labour Appeal Court, is now headed for the Constitutional Court...
