Ex-PMs should keep quiet with their pro-Israel views

Some of them may have been fierce adversaries during their political lives, but when it comes down to it, they speak with one sensible and humane voice.

Shuffling deckchairs not enough on its own

Monetary policy was too loose for too long. Current government expenditure is unsustainable, and is the government brave enough to make necessary cuts?

Time to consider intervening on interest rates

It is an immoral and abhorrent value system that dismisses the pain of some through interest rate rises as “unfortunate but necessary”, while others feel nothing.

Major parties need to show moral courage

In an environment where the economy is challenged by high inflation, does it really make sense to give people more spending money by tax cuts?

In the wake of Labor’s calamitous showing in the Upper Hunter byelection, you’d think Joel Fitzgibbon would be keeping a low profile (“Fresh internal stoush for ALP over pro-coal vision”, May 24). After all, NSW Labor followed his prescription for success – full-throated support for coal – and it spectacularly backfired. But no, he’s doing the rounds, still urging Labor to “wake up to itself”, back fossil fuels and ignore the need for a transition plan. Let’s not forget this is a seat Labor has never won. The eight-point fall in its primary vote appears to have come mainly from the loss of progressive voters, who moved to the independent Kirsty O’Connell, the only candidate advocating a move away from coal. Labor does need to wake up – to the fact that it stands to lose far more than it gains by following Fitzgibbon’s advice. -

If Joel Fitzgibbon really cares about the people who work directly in the coal industry, he would be pushing for the federal government to begin planning so that coal workers do not find themselves out of work in the years ahead (Letters, February 19). Germany has completely closed its coal operations in the Ruhr Valley which once employed 30,000 workers: with not one job lost. It took vision, planning, crack execution and political courage. Yes, we do export lots of coal, but international markets are shrinking as the world transitions to renewables, a trend that is speeding up and will result in job losses in the Australian coal industry. A global trend. Out of our control. An inevitability. So whose interest is Joel Fitzgibbon really protecting? Not the coal workers I suspect. -

PM shift towards net zero may be too little, too late

Very much like an iceberg in the Arctic, Scott Morrison is slowly melting to the idea of taking some sort of climate change action (“PM shifts towards net-zero emissions”, February 2), but it has to be targeted, incremental and won’t cost the people who vote for him any money. The trouble with this approach is by the time he does anything, we’re all cooked.
Chris Moe, Bensville
The idea to have zero emissions by almost 30 years from now is the Prime Minister playing politics. It’s a put-off. The Coalition has had the past 10 years to devise a plan and all we’ve got is obfuscation.
