Responding to President Biden’s proposed presidential determination to admit up to 62,500 refugees this fiscal year, Joanne Lin, the National Director of Advocacy and Government Relations at Amnesty International USA, said:
“It’s absolutely vital for the United States to revamp refugee admissions as soon as possible so that the U.S. can rebuild the capacity and the systems to welcome more people in the years to come. Communities across the United States, from local groups to faith-based institutions, are ready to welcome their new neighbors and thousands of people around the world are waiting to rebuild their new lives in safety and join their loved ones in this country. ....

Sullivan: White House 'absolutely committed' to raising refugee cap

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Sullivan told host Chris Wallace
He is absolutely committed to making sure that America is not only welcoming to refugees.but also that we raise the cap. He is committed to that and we are following through on that, Sullivan said.
Lifting the policies essentially banning refugees from parts of Africa and the Middle East was the first step in that plan, Sullivan contended, while raising the cap was the second step and would come in the weeks ahead.
He took the first step this past week, he will take the second in the weeks ahead, said Sullivan. ....

Biden's US refugee admissions policy misses its economic impact — Quartz

April 18, 2021
After backlash from progressives and human rights groups, US president Joe Biden confirmed this weekend that he would raise the annual cap on refugees permitted into the US, reversing course on plans to temporarily stick with a limit set by former US president Donald Trump, the lowest in the program’s 41-year history.
Following an influx of refugees into the US following World War II and the Vietnam War, Congress passed the Refugee Act of 1980, which standardized resettlement processes and capped the number of refugees allowed into the country.
Data from the Washington DC-based think tank Migration Policy Institute shows that cap has been successively lowered almost every year since, from a high of more than 200,000 refugees in 1980, to 15,000 last year. ....

What is Court Packing? Will Biden Do It?
President Joe Biden signed an order on Friday limiting U.S. refugee admissions this year to the historically low 15,000 cap set under his predecessor Donald Trump, shelving a plan to raise it to 62,500 and drawing the ire of refugee advocates and some Democratic lawmakers.
But as criticism mounted, the White House issued a statement saying Biden would set a final, increased refugee cap for the remainder of this fiscal year by May 15.
Biden s order to limit admissions to 15,000 was a blow to advocacy groups that wanted the Democratic president to move swiftly to reverse the refugee policies of the Republican Trump, who had set the figure as a way to limit immigration. ....
